NO I'KOTEST AGAINST TAX PAVING
The Observer may le uttmiy wi-on on tho subject but
we cati't aioc with the interpretation being put on the .spe
cial election returns by some citizens and some publications
to the effect that the vote was "a vote apainst the present
tax burden, that a big majority of taxpayers are inordinately
disgusted with tax paying. It may be and probably was a
vote against tax increase; it certainly was a vote against
certain forms of taxation. lint In interpret the returns as
a direct protest of a large majority against past and pres
ent sunwards 01 stale activity is wrong.
Political writers frequently write openly or insinuate that
this state has unusually high taxes. That is not true. Ore

Oregon has good schools, oIH.( county loaus, gooti water

as being (piile satisfactory. Some of the money with which

Our bonds aie nunn-ioiis and large enough in total, with
out doubt, but we nm.-.t leniember that a majority of the
voters of Oregon mdeied tho bonds at the polls. There's
a time, also, when a reasonable 1mm must be maintained,
when we can well pay off a bit la lore i-spending ,,.,. xiint
time seems to be neaiing, according to the election returns,
but there's nothing very astonishing about it.
There aie, of course, some people m eveiy state who
always want to find a way to shift the biuden onto the other
fellow. The move to sectne a S:! auto license fee is an ex
rniple. The present license money is actually a tax and the
revenue goes to pay inteiest on and retire the state road
bonds. If not available for that purpose, then the bonds must
re paid some other way, Irom pioperty taxes piobably
