the decision,. of the club to continue the event has brought
Jiirlh an editorial recently in The Oregonian. That paper
supports' the warden's view and says that the feed encour
nfees a .slaughter ..that is wasteful and inprudent. The
comment follows:

A Union county sportsmen's organization re
jected the suggestion that its annual "fish feed" be
discontinued. The proposal had been tentatively
advanced by State Came Warden Averill, in corres
pondence with the club. He believed that the an
nual banquet must necessarily result in mass de
struction of fish v together with considerable waste
and not improbable violations 'of the law these last
by persons not affiliated with the organization, but
imbued with the ambition to make records. The
'club 'Was not in 'accord with his view.
Let's agree that the members of the Union
.county, organization are sportsmen in every particu
lar, and that their ethical standards are high. But
let us also agree that the state game warden knows
whereof ho. speaks, and that there is merit in his
contention' that conservation should always be ad
vanced. ., It cannot well be advanced by a slaughter
that is an annual event, even though it is argued
that the letter of the law is Complied with, and that
the individual fishermen take no more than the
limit allowed them. What are limits? They arc
the doctrin" of thus-far-and-no-fai ther as applied to
game and fish. If all men caught or shot tho limit,
it would ' immediately be necessary to lower the
minibers now allowable to lower them hastily, lest
irreparable harm be done.
The Orpgonian, thoroughly believing in the
soundness of sportsmen's organizations, as factors
in consei vitin and law observance, . nevertheless
is of 4hv, opinion that to make a gala day or fish
ing, or of shooting, is questionable public 'policy. As
the waHen has indicated, it is necessarily wasteful
and imprudent.
