has arisen has been that of whether the player gets "value
received. Be that as it may, one cannot punch boards or
.' drop nickles in the slot in La Grande. It is only fair, there
fore, that a transient organization misnamed a "carnival"
should not be permitted to conduct what are alleged to be
games of chance in which an element of gambling may be
involved, I he city government is to be congratulated for
its stand with regard to the carnival here now.
Again there is the question of whether value is received.

For Hie sake of brevity, La Grande's monthly com
munity sales day the next which will be Wednesday of
the cominjr week hns been described as n trade extension
movement or "special merchandise offering for one day
only by La Grande's lending; stores." Mark you, however,
it is much more than this.
It is opportunity day for tho farmer. For this particu
lar day each month he may list with the chamber of com
merce secretary articles or stock or implements which he
wishes to sell at nuction. Last month a large crowd attend-!
cd the auction sale. This month there is a larger list of
items to be disposed of in the same way, ranging in de
scription from a saddle to a Ford touring car, from a pair
of Angora chaps to a cream separator, with horses, cows
and calves interspersed. These things are of interest to
both the buyer and the seller in that neither has to pay a
fee to have the stuff offei-ed for sale at the auction. Then,
too, community sales day is nn invitation to the butter and
egg men to bring in their product, realize the cash from
these and have the wherewithal to lako

All in all, it is n day highly worth one's while. One can
save the cost of the jrasoline consumed on the trip to La
Grande in just a few simple purchases. After that the
bargains one takes should show clear profit. Cominp; as it

on that one day's visit it should be possible to show oneself
