through Pacific highway traffic at 60 miles an hour and
wound up by colliding with an automobile. Execution of
that sentence and a few others like it will go far toward

rential rains of twenty-years-aero this week. Art Arlington
Item said the streets there were flooded; a Portland paper
of June 4, 1906, said that no through trains for the east
would be sent out from Portland over tho O. R. & N. except

emphatically by Miss Elizabeth Fox, director of public
health nursing of the American Red Cross.
, The public is enthusiastic, she observes, when announce
ment is made that some new disease, germ has been isolated,
or some new serum found, and immediately considers that
disease conquered and relaxes ita vigilance or interest in the
matter. But, she insists, our new knowledge cannot of it
self work any magic. It can 6perate only as it becomes the
property of men, women and children as well as the medi
cal profession.
People must learn to use this knowledge, in sickness and,
tetter still, in prevention of sickness. And they must be
willing to call a skillful doctor when they need him, and
go to the hospital for services they cannot get at home.
Only thus can medical wizardry serve mankind.
THE RING AROUND THE BATHTUB.

had a new play announced by the courts. The synopsis
has It that the hero perjures himself before a U. S. grand
jury and thnt his lawyer, seeking to save the skin of his
debonair client, attempts to discredit witnesses called by
the government to prove that there was wine in the bath
tub... The attorney points out to the court that such folk
iib Irv'in S. Cobb, who testified, as well as the Count of
Ilolwken, several chorus girls and triple-grass-widows of the
stage, were not qualified to say whether there was wine in
the tub becnuse, living1 in a prohibition age, and never hav
ing tasted liquor, they didn't know what wine really was.
And Joyce Hnwley, quoth the legal light, who contrasted
the pink of her nude flesh against the rich color of the
champagne or was it ginger alo? sat in the tub and its
contents somewhat pifflicated because she had "had a few
drinks before the party began" and was therefore not quali
fied to say whether she bathed in Carroll's wine or his
folly, or both; moreover, the case was so "dry" that the
jurymen were accused of being sound asleep during that
part of the hearing when Carroll was alleged to have lied
to the court about n beautiful girl being publicly disrolwd
nnd posed in the nude before his guests, though the girl
herself stood in her latest silhouette before the jurists, giv
ing their imaginations n Chance to ran wild.
In the second act, Federal Judge Goddard is seen gesti
culating with his gavel and is heard vociferating. He makes
two counts and each time he counts he says $1,000, making
a $2,000 fine. Furthermore, the court points out the dirty

the soiled bathtub, assigning him a part of the Atlanta
