Stage Star Blames Poor
Road Shows on Producer
NEW YOUK, '(AP) Madge
Kennedy believes the New York
stage Is doing u great work,, but
she cannot say as 'much for tho
road shows which annually carry
a taste of Broadway to the coun
try at large.
The star of Owen Davis latest
farce, "He warn of Widows," who
has seen many touring companies
cast, believes that the producers
themselves arc responsible for tho
poor showing. of the road shows
in acting and financial returns.
"Koine, persons place tho, blame
on t he movies,' sho said, "be
cause they have built large und
luxurious theatres for their pre
sentations, whke the .- legitimate
show houses in most instances are
disgraceful. Then, too, tho mov
ies are cheaper.
."The real trouble, however," is
found In tho road companies. As
a whole, their casts aro incom
petent. Many of them uro billed
as having original stars of the
Broadway success, which is not 'ul-
iways true, peoplo may fall for
this several seasons, but the time
coraes when they find a better
way to spend their money. ,
"Tho bust way to establish a
good reputation for the road show
is to send out more of the real ori
ginal casta and when several com
panies perf or living the same play
are put on tour, to select talented
and competent personnels.'
In this connection, sho mention
ed that the original company of
"lttoin," including Jeanno Kugets,
had played tp more people ami
taken in more money on tour than
anw of thu other nlmUnr rouu
shows. ,
I,onff weeka or rehearsals ou a
new production, during which fre
iuent changes aro made in the
tho manuscript, much attention aa
to scenery nnd a. thousand other
details, cause the players to feci
as if the play is a part of thorn,
,tl- ,., .InOn t-,.,1
"It is Impossible for other casts
to even-approach this feeling un
less they go through many re
hearsals and put originality into
their performance.' sho added.
"Mttle ' Miss Brown, "Twin
Beds," "Fir and Warmer," "Cor
; nered" and "Spite Corner" ure
soma of the plays in which Miss
Kennedy has starred. Sho likes
her present role the best, because
