OUT OUR WAY
By WILLIAMS
Statistics show that there are 11,908 more married
women in London than married men. It's a fortunate
Ionian who knows where her husband is.
Al Smith says he is out of polities and will' not seek to
return to the governor's chair in New York, nor will he
make a try for the presidency, lie even goes so far as to
state that he would support Roosevelt for that high office.
Perhaps he realizes that the country has a sense of humor
und that young Teddy hasn't.
THE 015SKKVKK BOYS.
Unintentionally, and probably because all reporters were
barred from attendance, one of the important social events
of the season was not given space in yesterday's Observer
the Christinas dinner for Observer carrier boys given by
,the publisher and business manager Saturday night. It
was strictly a family affair, but deserves particular men
tion for two reasons first, because of the amount of de
licious food consumed by all those present, and second, be
cause of the possible presidents, senators and postmasters
tf the future who were in attendance. . So many great
, men rtqd-,ap.gr.,bp'!i,,tl;at;wl,lnow tho.. Observer
crew of, boys includes its share of potential dignitaries.
This was the first affair of its kind for The Observer
and the boys did themselves proud. They were told to
bring a big appetite and they obeyed to the letter seven
teen of 'em, as a matter of fact. Mrs. I'hy's kitchen staff
produced delicious quantities of chicken, dressing, cran
berry jelly, asparagus, sweet potatoes, consomme, shrimp
salad, hot rolls, milk, strawberry sundae, and cake, and
the boys did justice to it all. Everybody was urged to
liave "seconds" and most of than indulged in an extra
portion of some favorite item on the menu. Table man
ners were strictly taboo to insure proper enjoyment, and,
us one of the participants, wc would say that the dinner
vas a huge success.
We are proud of The Observer carrier boys. They may
l:'it all of them be perfect carriers but they are all "100
I'M' cent boy" and they are loyal to the paper and their
jobs. The youngest one of them is 11 years and the old
est 17. One of llieni has carried Observers steadily for
seven years and one carries a route seven miles long each
evening, rain or shine, through snow or mud. Of course
they miss some papers occasionally, but they freely admit
that all complaints are due to the wind blowing the paper
away, or u dog in the neighborhood who carries it off, or
some excellent excuse. Now they have plans on foot to
heat the wind nod fool the dogs so that complaints will
;ecome a thing of history. Wc hope they are successful.
The Observer boys know all the old tricks id' the trade
and a good many that are strange to those of us who were
carrier boys in the "good old days" the days when type
matter was hand-set and the press hand-fed, when modern
folders were unknown in the smaller city and the boys
folded their own papers by hand, when the papers were as
likely to be three or four hours late as to be out on time,
when you traded your "extra'1 for a piece of pie and glass
of milk at some corner saloon in the cold giey dawn so
familiar to the old morning paper routes. In these days
wc are fortunate in having better papers, better methods,
and lxtter boys. Certainly the most gratifying thing, af
ter all, is found in the boys.
Next year we hope to have a bigger and belter Christ
mas party for the earners, and the boys are looking for
ward to it. The Observer has already established carrier
routes in lmbler and I'eny and similar impioved set vice
will follow gradually in other towns of the two counties.
Next year we want to have all those boys join in the an
imal dinner here in I.a Grande. And they will have to
bring unusual appetites if they compete successfully with
the present aggregation.

APES DESCEND
FRDMTHF MAN
roitTLAXn, Ore (Hpeclal)
That apes as wo know them to
day are degenerates from the an
cestral line, which 'man follows
more closely, is the view held by
Charles Hill-Tout, professor at
the I nlverslty of Uritish Colum
bia, lit the city on a short visit.
This view indicates that apes may
have beep descended from what
we know an a, human.
Professor Hill-Tout took excep
tion to the decision of the Prince
ton sclentisL lr. W, 13. Scott, who
claims that the "Javanese, ape
man" was the most primitive man
of which the world has record.
"The fossil may be the oldest In
our museums, hut I think that
Konic of the Inter fossils show
more truly the original character
istics," said the professor of an
thropology. "In my opinion the
Javanese skull is a specialized
type of its day, and therefore not
a true example? of early man."
Professor Hill-Tout bac his
contention on the accepted law of
capitulation, which says that the
young of a species live - 'through
ancestral forms. The human foe

almost the same line, so that it
is almost impossible to distinguish

characteristics. Thorefon:.' -savs

This fact is often , disregarded i
by American scientists, and I do
not think that Dr. Scott has taken
it into consideration in his deci
sion that the Javanese fossil is
the iaost primitive man."
Professor Hill-Tout Is a member
of the executive board of the
Scholl of American Research, a
fellow of the Royal Society of
Canada, and holds several other
titles. He published recently a
volume entitled "Han and His
Ancestors," which outlines his
views and knowledge on the sub
