That Prompt
Satisfactory Service
Many motorists of La Grande have learned
how to avoid costly repairs and annoyance.
They have Playles call for their car and
return it all washed, greased and ready
for miles of driving.
WASHINGTON, 1. f. Molor-
'dotti'a most strious ailment, name
Jly. the dUVrsity of traffic regula
tions, Is yielding to treatment und
there are definite indications thut
a movement toward traffic uni
rormily on a national scale lias
set in.
This far-reaching announcement
to the country's car owners mine
from national headquarters of tho
gUiici-lcan Automobile association
today. It was made under the
signature of Thos. 1. Henry, presi
dent of Mhe national motoring
body, who has completed a survey
of what the organised motorists
are doing to evolve !hc4r own na
tional traffic code.
"The agreement readied at
Orand lEuplds Tor an ordinance for
Michigan," said' Mr. Henry, "may
be regarded as tho launching of
tho uniformity movement in earn
est. What Michigan has dona will
eventually be. done by every stulo
In Die union, and tho consumma
tion of tho process will mean the
,end of the quack remedies that we
have been applying to our traffic
problems."
Tlfo uniformity movement, Mr.
Henry said, has been to a largo
extent fostered and promoted hy
the motor clubs affiliated with the
A. A. A. Michigan's ordinance, on
which legislative uetton will be
postponed until after the next
meeting of the Hoover conference,
was initiated by the Detroit Auto
mobile club which Becured tho uni
form co-operation of state and city
officials to bring it to a successful
conclusion.
Club Plays Trailing Role.
"It is not only In Michigan," de
clarvd Mr. Henry, "that tho or
ganised motorists are making head
way toward tho xniform traffic
code needed by the country. In
the. state of Washington tho Auto
mobile club of Washington played
a leading role In getting tho vari
ous official, trade and civic, bodies
to agree on a uniform state motor
vehicle law which stands a splen
did chance of being adopted by
the stale, legislature when It meeta
In a few weeks.
"The Cleveland Automobile club
performed a similar service In
solving tho traffic problem of that
city, while, many other A. A. A.
clubs throughout thocot"Hry are
engaged In similar work, thus;
eliminating local differences und
paving the way for national uni
formity. "It is to bo expected' that
the Hoover conference will find
the work that has been done l-
thu clubs a splendid basis on which
to work. '
What Oils means is that the
organized motorist himself Is
evolving his own traffic code, that
he will popularizo It and glvo it
a measure of support that would
be Imposslblo if It were forced
upon him.
"The way to get nation, wide
uniformity in motor laws and
regulations Is to start. with state
wide uniform laws first. If this
policy Is followed. It should be not
Long before motorists can feel at
home, and safe, In any traffic they
happen to find themselves. When
all the states adopt their own traf
fic codes It w ill be, found that tin y
are virtually uniform with each
other.
'nr Owner's Welfare Involved.
"Tho A. A. A. clubs havo I ho
national viewpoint on traffic con
trol because they represent tho na
tional car owner and must con
sider his safety and welfare. Sec
tionalism Is rapidly vanishing as
a consequence. What Ihc Michigan
A. A. A. Clubs have done can be
done in California, In Florida or
In Maine. f
"This new plan -of safety
through abolition of confusion In
merely the process of building by
starting with tho foundations.
Heretofore there has been too
much effort directed toward the
im possible. Nationwide, abolition
iof confusing motor laws In not pos
sible tint 11 an automobllist can
drive through his own state with
out flndli g H necessary to con
duet himself differently In each
cltv and town. I'nlfonn codes In
any state ll serve to convert the
people of That state to the great
need Tor standardization. It should
be only a short step between that
and nation-wide uniformity. State
codes will be compromises and our
experience bus been thut such
compromises are universal. The
people of Maine will find that they
pre f i r. on the avernge, the same
regulations os the people of Cali
fornia, and vice versa."
