Mitchell is close to being right, dangerously close, as a
matter of fact, regardless of whether or not he talked too
much and violated army rules in getting the country's attention.-
Whatever his technical guilt may be as measured
by army regulations, he will not suffer at the hands of the
people of the country, lie has done the country a good
service. A few gray-haired generals who know combat
only by old-fashioned standards and army conduct by the
s-ime rule may object and vote him guilty. Hut that's a
small thing in this instance.
ALASKA'S DETKRIOR.VriON, I
Thanks to the moving pictures, the American public
feels itself quite familiar with Alaska and few people de-j
sire closer acquaintance than the screen versions afford.
Ilut Alaska constitutes an enormous area under the Stars'
and Stripes. It is of imperial extent and the natural wealth j
it contains should be a satisfaction and deep concern of j
this country. ,
Vet Secretary of the Interior Work asserts the lerri-j
tory is rapidly becoming a "lust province," which he ex-1
plains on the ground that opportunity for expansion has!
been curtailed by bureau officials made hesitant by limited
authority. The white population at one time was 7.tM)0;
now it is estimated at 20.000. Production from its natural 1
resources once was carried on enthusiastically and to the
enrichment of those engaged in the work; it is not so now. i
Alaska for a time was a popular touring ginimd. The mini-1
ber of visitoi-s has declined. j
. This deterioration ought not to be peimittcd. Our,
reputation for progressiveness should be maintained in!
Alaska and elsewhere under the flag. The government has'
poured many miliums of dollars into Alaskan development'
enterprises which have degenerated into national liabilities.!
A change of plan clearly is in order if constructive work is!
to go on. Congress will have to adopt the program that j
will save Alaska. I
