Motorists A re; Warned On
The Use of Air-Cleaners
"An effective air-cleaner is an
excellent thing for. an nuloinohito,
but a word of caution seems to be
necessary for Individual owners
who are having cleaners installed
on cars not so equipped by the
makers," according to Harris
Krench, local Paige-Jewett dealer..
"The manufacturers of I'aige and
Jewel t cars are sending such a
warning to all owners, advising
Ihi'm strongly not to use any air
cleaner that lias not been approved

by the fadtory, and tlv samts advice
Is good for owners of other niak.es
as well. v. -,
"A little thought will show why
this advice is good, yet thoro arc
indications that many owners aro
purchasing nir-eloaners .without
considering their - adaptability lo
their particular engines. ., :
"A cleaner that will'' function
efficiently on one engine may bt
either useless or actually detri
mental when installed on an engine
I of different characteristics'.. . .
"There arc two general '"types of
air-cleaners. One., filters1 foreign
particles from tho air by means of
t'iuo-meshed screens; tho otlier
separates the sotld particles front
the nir ,ly centrifugal netlon or by
inducing high alr-veloclty that
causes the solid partleba to shoot
past the inlet because, of their mo
mentum. ; .
"Kor any engine? the filler typo
must have sufficient area of screen
to permit enough air lo be. readily
drawn - through it- for all engine
speeds, and Hits area must not bo
reduced by the collection of dust
and dirt on tho screen.
"Tho problem with the centri
fugal or velocity type of cleaners is
moro complex. Their efficiency
depends on tho speed at which tho
air. passes through tho cleaner and,
unless the cleaner is designed for
ue with the particular nglno oa
which It Is Installed, Micro is dan
ger that H either will fall to re
move tho dust particles or else so
.restrict the air passages I hat It will
act us a drug on I he motor.
''Kuthor than incur tho lnUnr
danger, it. would bo belter to do
without the cleaner. If tho cleuner
drags on tho air Intake, the result
Is just the same as If you run the
engine with tho choke partly
uioseo, . That is. excess fuel will
be. drawn through the carburetor
jet snd raw gasoline will enter thn
cylinders. This is not only- waste
ful of fuel but causes rrankctuw
oil dilution, faulty lubrication, ex
cess carbon formation and other
troubles.
"Jt will be readily seen, there-.

Use of Motor Bus in
Nation Shows Marked
Increase During 1925
Of marked significance In con
nection with the growth of high
way transportation haa been the
enormous Increaso In tho iiso of
motor busses during tho present
year.
This increunn has been shown
not only In the establishment of
many new independent bus Hues
In various purls of the country but
also in the very wide recognition
by steam and electric rail lines of
the nocessity for using busses und
trucks for satisfactory p'jbllo serv
ice.
Tho old style "jUncy" bus prac
tically disappeared and in Us place
has cotno the motor coach, often
styled, for wunt or a better name,
tho de luxo or purlor car motor
bus.
In connection with Iho impor
tant part It is playing In modern
transportation, Vico President
Conrad E. Speus, of the Chicago,
Burlington & Qulncy railroad, has
the following to say: "Tho motor
vehicle as a factor in trans porta
tlon will stay until superseded by
the airplane, or something like 1;,
and the only recourse for rail
roads is to adopt it and work it
into existing lines."
fkrZcoJiomical Trantportttfom
bn a general loworlng of used car
valuations and prices. 80 many
cars of one to thrco years' use will
bo offered on tho used cur market
thero will bn practically no market
for tho cars older than this ox-
cept in tho ht'ttiT grades.
sclicutiKti Aw increase!.. -riuns
of manufacturers aro for
largely Increased schedules, but
unless buying develops on a scale
which permits deuters to move
thesn increased numbers at a prof
it, the present announced schedules
will be curtailed. This moans that
dealers need not anticipate the ne
cessity of excosslvo allowances to
niovo tholr , Increased now car
quotas.
'Lines which cannot bn moved
without excessive allowances will
not bn made in largo numbers and
dealers will bo fully justified in
switching to lines for which thero
Is ready dmnand ol fair tnrms."
