Nevertheless, many of our largest and
most HticeeKsfuI merehandisin Institutions
have been founded with a sincere desire
to rcmtVr the pihlic a better servlee than
it has been getting and only those mon
ami organizations that have kept the
faith and kpt nllvo n deep sense of ob
ligation to their associate and the puhllr
have, succeeded to any marked decree.
HkaKtVS Stores originated from the ef-
fortH of one man, who, with a sense of
(uihllc duty nought to find the meuns for
relieving ii situation which uas working a
severe hardship on a targe section of the
country and incidentally discovered how
richly the public rewards its real serv
ants. This man was R. M. Hkaggs. futhor
of the present executive heads of Skaggs
Stores a minister of tho gospel by choice
nnd voentian but at that time a strug
gling homesteader among a lot of othL-r
equally hard pressed homcstenders near
American Falls, Idaho.
Some two years prior to the opening of
the first Skaggs Hlore at American Kails,
Maho. in 1915, Reverend Skagg came
west in search of health. Tho section in
nnd around American Palls appealed to
lit in from the health standpoint, so he
filed on a- homestead anF settled then.
As is u a-ml with most preachers, he had
very little money and what little he did
have was soon expended In the erection
of a homesteader's "shanty" und the pur
chase ot a team, tools and such equip
ment as he necessarily - must have. ile
und his family eked out an existence ns
best they could and, hy rtason of his call
ing and a natural tnlcnt for leadership,
ho soon became somewhat of a leader
among his fellow homesteaders.
Trices on all commodities In American
Kails were hltrh to H. M. Skaggs, seem
ingly much higher than conditions justi
fied and frequent dlHcussion with neigh
bors ehtnbllsned a concurrent opinion, but
how und what steps to take to correct
or overcome this condition was the prob
lem. Kventuully Mr, - Pknggs evolved, a plan
whereby he thought die could operate suc
cessfully, u plan which among other things
incliiiled a program of ph'yslcal effort for
himself w hich today would .be considered
little whorl of homluge. This store could
not be an ordinary storo nor could It bo
operated In nny ordinary munnrr. The
strictest economy In Its Installation ami
operation was necessary, else it would f:iil
In its avowed purpose, which was to re
duce pr(cs. To reduce prices, he was
practical enough to know that one nriwt
rwluce opt-raiing cost ami waste. There
fore, w ith his purpose of service built
upon a great ideal, ho formulati-d
rehemo of operation as practical us it wns
simple.
S. M. SUnggs had no money nnd noth
ing on which he could seenre mont-y et
rvpt his chnmcti'r, and to l. V. rav?s.
tht-n president of the I-'irst National Hank
of American Kails and later Governor ol
the State of Jduho, he pivscnti'd his pro!i
b m and plans, securing I. hoo.
On a rentt-d lot on a si tie stnet he
erected with Ids own hands a frame build
Ing of dimensions t S x :t - fet-t and in this
little building in the summer of 11(15 was
opened the first Hkagg store of the West
In that store S. M. Skaggs tolled dilig.-ntly
fr iim-ntly for week nt u. time walking
two nnd a half inih-s daily from his
homestead to work and back In the e
ning so that all possible horsepower could
be -ised on the faint.
This store was the first unit In n chain.
which In a little more than ten years
blankets the !nciflc 'oast and extending
as far oust as Colorado and Nebraska
comprises more than three hundred of the
finest food Btorcs.
S. M. Sknggs. some four yours after the
opening of the first store, with his hinlth
regained, returned to the geographical lo
cation of his choice and the occupation
dictated by his mora! conviction that of
preaching the Gospel as he understands it
but many of th methods cmnloyel by
him, th founder, are still used: used with
the knowledge that "Ho who serves best

imbued into the lives Qf the older per

still lives and finds expression.
