Portland is the scene of a tunnel controversy this week
v.ith various interests ardently supporting: and others bit
terly opposing the proposed underground route to Tualatin
V alley. As is often the case, private axes are chief factors
in a municipal difficulty of this kind. Property owners on
the west side and the east side are probably fearful of such
a close addition to the city because of the effect it might
have on the sale value of their holdings. They point out
that there are thousands of lots available in Portland's
present vast area, that no congestion exists and no expan
sion is needed. And across the ridge in Tualatin valley are
property owners equally anxious to make their holdings
closer to the business district and more desirable and valu
able: They probably favor the tunel ardently. The iSr
little individual citizen who already owns his house and lot
has no place in the picture and probably doesn't want one.
He's chiefly interested in minding his own business and
getting enough money to pay present taxes.
