The naming of "Jack" MacNider, formal national com
mander of the Legion and all-'round fine gentleman, as
assistant secretary of war to the vacancy occasioned by
Davis' promotion indicates that MacNider was very care
fully considered for the head job himself. Perhaps Cool
idge prefers to have his cabinet officers Work up, and in
mat way come into omce wiin some conception oi us re-
quirements. If that is the case, MacNider can be counted
on to do his share of "working up." At least he will work
and he's already up. His appointment should give the
war department stock a t.uiisidurable boost ut this time.
He is' a man worth watching one who will go far in public
service.
