Softwood Demand Slow;
Daily Movement Heavy
Lighter buying by the yard trade
has slowed up- softwood demand
but he current movement in still
heuvy and in. excess of lust year's
totals, says the American Lumber
man, Chicago. 'While bookings of
the principal softwood 'mills during
the week ended Sept. SO Tell below
those for the preceding week, they
were but 2 per cent below the total
cut, which also declined. Slocks
were reduced by shipments S per
cent In excess of the total output.
Demand Is'undoubtedly being sus
tained by the record building activ
ity In the city areas, us rural sec
tions continue to buyJlghtly and
are not making any appreciable additions-to
their holdings. A survey
of retail yards in the Kansas City
territory showed that .while fifties
for August were P.2 per cent larger
than in July, and 20 percent larg
er I Htm in the corresponding month
last. year. stockB at the. end of the
month were, 1.0 per cent, less than a
month before and O.S per cent less
than' a year ago. In view of the fact
that this situation, fairly typical of
the middle West. -has changed little,
in the lust month, producers are
expecting a wave. of eleventh hour
buying that wiil bring fall business
up to a satisfactory total. - ,
Southern pine ; has reached a
strong statistical, position that
should give a new; firmness to the
market. Orders booked during the
week of Sept. 18 showed a greater
margin .above, production than at
any time since Nov. 28, 1924, while

1126. Buyers are exerting a bear
ish influence on the barket but.
