OUT OUR WAY
By WILLIAMS
The road leading to Easy street is always littered with
the trimmed remains of easy murks.
COME IN OUT OF THE STICKS!
The announcement that the Eastern Oregon Light &
Power Co, will build a building hero to house their offices
and display rooms is gratifying to those interested in the
city's construction and development. It is an improve
ment badly needed by the power company and one they
have contemplated for some time. While laying a founda
tion for this structure, we are inclined to think that the
company is at the same time, consciously or unconsciously,
laying the foundation for a building that will eventually
houso the general officos of the concern. It is only a
matter of time, we believe, until Air. Lottridge and hi.)
Associates will bo convinced that La Grande is the logical
place for their headquarters, that the leading city of
Eastern Oregon, which is becoming more and more tlvj
dominant factor in their business, is the proper location
for the main offices of such a progressive corporation.
We would like to have them over here. We are confident
they'll make the move some near or distant .day in the
future, and though, we hate to imagine the envy and
sorrow of Baker when that time arrives, it's more or less
inevitable. All roads lead to La Grande, so why should
the company's officials have to suffer the inconvenience
of traveling those roads continually? Why not stay perma
nently some day and have it over with? Of course we
realize it is futile to urge them to build a second story
on that new building now but they'll have to do it even
tually, of course. You can't keep a good company out in
the suburbs away from a good town forever, . And at leant i
they'll have the proper1 foundation hero .when 'the light
finally dawns with convincing brilliancy. Climb on the
band wagon the music's fine.
GEOGRAPHICAL ATTRACTIONS.
Magazine and newspaper leaders have been surfeited in
recent months by a succession of articles, interviews and
statements by Americans as to why they are living in the
United States or nbroad, as the case may be, and by Euro
peans and Asiatics as to why thoy are living in the United
States or their native countries.
Ilei-e is a subject of interest to all irrespective of na
tionality, race or color. It embodies an appeal to the ar
dent nationalist 'and the professed internationalist. At the
same time it is a subject which might be distorted by
prejudices and fallacious convictions unless presented in
symposium.
A London critic finds the European atmosphere most
salubrious because his visits to the United States have
convinced him that there is neither liberty nor freedom
in the Land of the Free. Another writer, of American par
entage but born abroad, lives in the United States to eviub
association with those American tourists whom he com
plains ruined for him his years of study and professional
endeavor abroad. A proponent of New World residence
grows red in the face when he thinks of the red tape, with
which every European tourist is entangled, smothered and
delayed, of European living conditions and of foreign poli
tics. So every year witnesses more Europeans establishing
permanent residences in the United States and more Amer
icans making homes for themselves in England, Fiance,
Italy and elsewhere because they have found their "heart's
desire" in their adopted country. And yet, though they
may disagree on other things, all concede that the plaeo
to make money is in the United States and the other New
World countries. America is a provident haven of workers
and the inspiration of business and industrial genius. Old
World offerings call to the unimaginative peasant, th)
student, the artist and wealth.

Would You
Like to Build
A Home?
Maybe you are planning on building a
home of your own in the next year or so
it's as fine an investment as you can hope
to make.
The whole problem is one of financing.
Where are you going to get the money nnd
how soon do you want it?
You can probably buy a lot on a small
payment down and the balance a little each
month. But building the house will require
a good deal more money. You'll have to
have or be able to get approximately one
half of the total cost in cash.
Start now to accumulate that amount by
putting your savings in the La Grande
Building & Loan. Determine to put aside
a certain amount each month it will ac
cumulate quicker than you realize and will
earn you 7 interest compounded semi
annually. The necessary fund will be avail
able when you need it most. Ask us to
give you details today.
