A BUDGET OF YOUR EXPENSES
The proposed city bu&get for the year 1026 is pul
hshed in this issue of The Observer. It is a publication
, worthy of the attention of all good citizens. In it are
' listed the estimated expenses that will be required of the
; city in the coming year, and also a comparative statement
i.showuig.-proviauiue3timates and expenditures of past years
. It should be of interest because it is your money that is
to be spent and it's published for that reason. After re
viewing the budget and considering it at length, it is a
very gratifying thing to find that the city will operate
' ns economically this year as last. If the city were at a
standstill, if we were making no growth, no progress, no
. improvements in many city departments, such a thing
would be natural. If we remained the same city in size
and conveniences and protection for an indefinite time, iti
ji would of course be an easy matter to keep the cit7 budget
f down. But such is not the case. La Grande is growing.
La Grande is progressing, changing, improving. And that
' costs money. There are some departments that show a
substantial increase in the budget, but the commission
committee has been able to effect sufficient savings in
; other ways to make the total but a few dollars greater
thnn in previous years. The city of La Grande is a big
corporation. .It's a five million dollar business, and al-j
: though the' sura -required for its operation is quite a bit
yi inuiiuy we are inclined to believe that we are fortunate
- it doesn't require more! The commission deserves com
; mendation both for their efforts toward economy and to
,. wait! city improvement and progress.
