Future Oil Supply
Apparently Assured
Anyone who In concerned about
the future security of the country,;
in pence ,or war, so far u the
supply of petroleum products Is
concerned, wbl find material reas
surance In a report which has Just
been published by a committee of
eleven members of the Htjard of
Directors of the American l'etrol-
iini Institute. The report Indi
cates that there is cause for alarm.
Jite in 1924 President Coolldg"
appointed the Federal Oil Conser
vation Hoard, eonsisiing of four
members of his cabinet, to make a
study of the future supply of pe
troleum in the United States. , In
consequence of the president's no
tion, the Hoard of Directors of the
American Petroleum. Institute ap
pointed a committee to make re
port on the future supply of nnd
dejnand for petroleum,- Tho com
mittee, enlisting the co-operation
of experts in oil and of numerous
authorities outside tho industry,
conducted an investigation which
has taken six months to complete.
The report is probably ho most
thorough study of the oil industry
that has ever been made.
Predictions of failure of, the
American supply of oil have been
made almost from the ' beginning
of the oil industry. All have prov
ed fallacious. When the produc
tion of old fields has dropped Off,
the oil Industry has found Hew
fetlds.
Oil Is a hidden resource. Without
actual drilling there is no way of
telling where it lies nor how much
of it there is. It must be nought
and discovered. There are, how
ever, sound facts on which to bnse
an estimate of how much oil exist
ing fields will yield through pres
ent methods of pumpinj; and low
ing. The report fixes the figure
nt five billion, three hundred mil
lion barrels. And the estimate is
made that after present fields ceas
to produce there will remain In
the ground, unrecoverable by
pumping or flowing, twenty-six bll
Hon barrels of oil. a large portion
of which may lie recovered through
new, but known, methods, such as
flooding with water, the use of air
or gas pressure to force the oil out,
or mining. Altogether this com
prises a considerable quantity of
oil "in sight." Hut the-major re
serves of the nation lie In an area
of more than a billion unexplored
acres of land in Hie T'nlted Mates
htch are geologically favorable lo
the presence of oil. Here new fields
are to be discovered. Then there
are imports. particularly from
South America, which wlH relieve
the Btraln on the American re
serves. And when, If ever, the sup
ply of petroleum falls, the nation
has huge deposits of oil shale,
coal and lignites, from all of which
Mfiuld fuel and lubricants can be
obtained in such vast .quantities as
to present an aspect of unlimited
supply, which will be drawn upon
as price of products Justifies devel
opment.
The report draws particular at
tention to two Impending develop
ments of very great Importance.
One is the extension within the
industry of "craking" crudo oil. a
process which Increases tho yield
of the all-Important gasoline. The
