THE CITY'S TRAFFIC PROBLEM.
Nothing so impresses the casual driver, who is accus
tomed to small city driving and minor traffic, as a1 return
to metropolitan centers where the traffic problem is obvi
ously becoming' one of the most serious with which our
large cities must contend. To the average resident of
1'ortland or Seattle, perhaps, the congestion of automobiles
cn every approaching highway and city thoroughfare is a
natter of little concern an evil to he endured and mado
the best of, but nevertheless it promises to become a tre
mendous obstacle to both business and pleasure as car own
ership reaches ever nearer the saturation point.
Cn Sunday afternoon, for example, between Seattle and
Tacoma, on the south, or Everett, on the north, the Pacific
highway fairly swarms with motor cars. For miles the
c.rs stream past with just enough space between machines
to give some measure of sf icty in driving seldom a
chtince to pass the driver ahc ,d or be passed, so con-
e':zzt is the stream of motor cis in the opposite direction.
Occasionally you see evidence of some minor accident and
possibly some too-hurried diiver hits a bridge rail and
swings across the road, stoppiirg cars, bmupar-to bumper
;for ITTull mile in bath diicctions while the wreck is beinur
cleared off the io..d in the space of ten minutes. And
this is tne higiiw.y "out in the o; n" fifteen or twenfy
miles fiom i.ny oily of size.
Wh. t pleasure the u.b n ;-v idont gets fiom ;uirh d i.'
ing, or fiom the eoiucesUd pi nirs ami lecreations sueh
driving affords, is a r.iaUrr of debate. 1ml certain'y there
comes a time when our p escnt site's ;.nd highways viil
not be adequate to handle automobile traffic in metropo it in
areas. The condition that crisis in our own Northwest
cities, is not unusual, of cmnse, and much greater traffic
' is handled in and ne ir easte: n cities. The Post road I, 'ad
pig along the Sound into New Yoik City has been f.unou:
for years for its solid hues of cars for many mi'es, ai d Do
t'oit's streets and highways are swamped with continuous
motor car movement that is am.r.iag to witness.
How leng hi,, people who do the diiving will stand the
pressure only time can tell but futuie g. Derations will see
many impiovements in our highway systems and various
methods of handling motor transpoi tatioii. Already I)e
troit is looking ahead with plans for super bouievaids en
tering the city that will be many times as wide as present
loads and, like the projected auto highway into London,
provide! for five lines of traffic in each direction and no
speed limits. For those who consider every dollar in the
light of the tax Inn den it may carry, the piospecl may l -startling,
but even the famous Colombia Kiver hmliwa.v
v ill have to be "double-tracked" some il y to care for th
evor-ine. easing swaim of ears. Or v. :11 we be tiaveling by
air in those d eys ,-nd be wonyiug about ae.ial highways
and traffic tikin. v.
