f TOO MANY HOME RUNS.
Baseball fans are complaining that too many home run.
are being hit in the big leagues. There is a wide demand
lor the adoption of a less lively ball. Discontent in the

1 a baseball fan would cea.se to get a thrill out of a circuit
j clout and yet that very thing is occurring every day this
.season. The Jiiajor league players lmve. been hitting so
many home runs this year that the bleachei itcs are con
'Vinced a livelier ball is in use.
A thing ceases to be thrilling when it is repeated too
frequently and home runs are quite as commonplace thu
year as singles. Kvcry team in the two major leagues
has one" or more contenders for the crown of the "king 01
&wat" and considerable space is required in the sporting
pages of the newspaper for recording the numerous home
. runs made every afternoon.
That which everybody can do is no achievement. ltJ
was once considered a feat to hit the ball over the fence
or into the left field bleachers because it was something
few could do. Nobody would play solitaire if everytodv
always won. Lovers of baseball would soon tire of their
favorite game if their team never lost a game. It is the
unceitainty and the suspense of the game which makes it
the red blooded, exciting contest it is. ' ,
It may be that b.iselndl is developing better players.
Such things have hnpp''iid before and now seem natural.
If the sport is producing better players and harder hitters,
then perhaps it would be wise for the good of the game
to make the baseball less lively.
