Writes Here
From Orient
La Grande Man Visiting
Japan in Company with
College-University representatives.
A letter from Waldo Stoddard,
I-a Gramic boy who is on a trip
to the Orient in company with re
presentatives of other universities
and colleges to attend a conier
ence, has been received here b
his mother, Mrs. George Stoddard.
'ihe letter follows:
Kobe, Japan
July 14, lit:' 5.
Mother Dear:
Since my last letter to you we
have .spent nearly a week In the
various large cities of MHtthern
Jiipun. 'i o me. this country seems
much like a Kuirylund because ev
er) tiling is queer and strange. The
people with tneir quaint costumes,
munners and homes, with tueir ox
carts, rice fields and peculiar ve
hicles are Just exuctiy like ult the
picture" we see tit home.
Tills is all Interesting to us but
the extremely crowutd condition
and enormous man power causes a
very low .standard of living n
compared to us in America, As a
t hi lily, patient, hardworking peo
ple Ihey make us feel upturned of
on i selves.
At the present time we are tra
velling on Japan's Inland Sea,
sailing In und out between hun
uivua oi oeauiUul inlands. Tomor
row morning we laud at Nugusoki,
(It isn't necessary to pronounce it)
our last Japanese port before leav
ing for China.
it is duuottul If wd will get to
take our trip into the interior of
China a we planned, but we are
going to Shanghai to see the V. M.
i. 4v- auiiioriiies beiore we know
just wnat will do.
The Japuuese people have been
more than kind to us, showering
us with many courtesies und prov
ing to be more hospltuble than the
Americans.
Our trip so fur has been wonder
ful and If It only continued so
satiMticlory as it has been. It will
be worth two yours of college.
With ever the warmest love und
best wishes for your welfare.
