Discovery of Ancient
Wall Again Involves
Holy Sepulchre Site
JEltPSALKM, (AP) Part of
the wall enclosing Jerusalem built
by Agrippa. one of the last Jew
ish kinga. and destroyed by Titus,
haw been uneartber recently. About
titi yards of the wall, some four
yards in thickness, have been un
covered by the Jewish exploration
Society.
This discovery lias aroused deep
interest In archeological und reli
gious circles, if this is the third
of the series of walls built around
Jerusalem, It si argued. It brings
Into uucstion the authenticity of
the sfto of the. Holy Sepulchre,
which In thus plaeed outside the
city walls.
The third wall was commenced
by Herod Agrippa about 40-44 A.
I . ami was Interrupted by the
1 toman governor of Syria, to be
completed Inter by the Jews be
fore the final siege of the city.
By all accounts there were three
walls which protected Jerusalem
on the north, built successively
both for the protection of the
weakest side of the defences and
lo afford room for tho steady
growth of the city at the begin
ning of the Christian era. Both
the first and second walls were
standing at the time of Christ and
the place j of eruxeirixlon and
buriul must have . been oubilde
them.
Some scholars have contended
that 'the site or the Holy
Sepulchre is ImpossUie been use it
is shut within ancient Jerusalem.
It. being known I hut crucifixions
did -not lake place within the city
walls. Adherents of this view, es
pecially a large number .of "the
Knglish community, who have al
ways entertained doubts about tho
location of the Holy Sepulchre, see

covery of what lis believed lo bu

The Jewish Exploration Soelely,
which Is con due tinng these exca
vations, holds with Hr. W. P. Al
bright, Oirector of the American
School of Oriental Research here,
that the discovery or the Agrlppan
does not seriously affect "this long
smoldering ejiu-ilon.' Or. Albright
admits Uiat the situation is awk

Shall we decide for the Holy
Sepulchre ami against the evidence,
of against the Holy Sepulchre and
also against other evidence of little
