Colored Film
Photography Used
In "Cytherea."
(By George Fl(ziuaiirice)
The next murked udvance in the
motion pict ure art will constitute
the more general use of color pho
tography in its various treatments.
For years the use of color in
photoplay productions has been the
exception. There have been short
subjects In color which, however,
have been looked upon as novel
ties. In photoplays, an occasion
al touch of color lias been em
ployed to enhance the beauty of a
scene. T!ils, however, has general
ly had an unfavorable effect upon
the black and white scenes, which
were made less effective by con
trast. The cffeet( was the same as the
use, of soft-focus views hero and
thefc'1rr a photoplay,'' which prac
tice has now been practically dis
continued, for the reason that tin
contrast between the soft-focus
effects and the sharp views tended
to make the production an assort
ment of different photographs ra
ttier than a Miiooth method of
telling a story.
In other words, the illusion was
interrupted. ,Tho mixed use of
treatments made one conscious of
photographic 1 ricks I nst cud of
keeping one's mind on the tsory.
Photography should be used to en
hance a story or a situation and
not lo overwhelm it.. At least as
far us a photoplay production Is
concerned.
In "Cytherea," Goddess of Love,
I have attempted to capitalize on
the very objection which color pho
tography has had in telling the
story in a photoplay. The con
t rast between the colored scenes
and the black-and-white scenes
enhances hiy story value, making
it strong and vivid. The lovers In
the story dreum of Cuba as a land

of colorful beauty.
Their dream Is shown In all its
attractive colors. When they ar
rive in Cuba they find it hot and
drab. Just the opposite to the
dreams. To register this contrast
most effectively, we actualy show
their dream In all lis colorful beau
lies. The reality in black and
white Is therefore rendered with
much greater force than if both
the dream and the actuality Ave re
shown in black and Avhlto.
It Is my belief that color AVill
play a most important part in thus
photoplays. This will prove only
one of many advantages la tho use
of color. We have merely scratch
ed the surface of color photo
graphy. One producer has Just
finished a production which avIH
be colored In its entirety. This avIII
prove, another interesting, experi
ment. Othejrs are devoting nioro time
to,tlieihought of color in produc

ly evident that we must look to
the use of color photography for
our next great step In the progress
of motion pictures, and It is also
apparent that Ihe coming year wilt
see the first signs of greater de
velopment of this factor in the
film art than ever before.

Crammed with action ond thrills
of a melodramatic order and en

the story, which was written espe
