FRIENDLINESS WITH AMERICANS.
' A Svornan's letter published in the Daily Colonist, Vic
toria, b. C, recently, gives a most interesting view of th
attitude some "Canadians" have' toward Americans. For
tunately we know that such expressions come from a
minority, not the majority, and most frequently are from
the pure English residents who have migrated to the prov
ince and have not yej. absorbed a reasonable measure of
the to'erancc, broad mindedncss, . and sensible friotidlincs.i
that is otherwise characteristic of the average citizen of
this continent. In part, the letter is as follows:
" It seems that your paper is afraid to publish
anything that is not exactly complimentary to the .
Americans. You surely must know that the Yanks
never once considered our feelings in anything,
and publish the most insulting things about us.
1 have read articles in their papers tli.it made my
bipod boil with indignation, ....
I would like to remind others who are wrongly
informed about this, that what the Yanks did in
this war was not done to help us, but to help
France, because the French helped them against
England during that American., rnvoUitioui ( J.'OiuvA
great debt to France" was the cry heard every
where when the question was discussed about their
entry into this war. ...
The Americans are not our friends, never have
been, and I do not think they ever will be. They
are a too mixed population to bo the friends of
any one nation or of anything but the almighty
dollar. - - ., ; "
Such an attitude i:;,' of course, very foolish and comes
very probably from an Kiiglishwoinan, not a Canadian,
whose -petty Jealousies, and prejudices are those of (he old
Middle; Class now-fast becoming .extinct, we trust. Arty'
American could set this Canadian neighbor right its to our
impulse in the late war. We neither "limned", dur soldiei
selves to Great lbilain nor went unselfishly to the aid of
France. We were almost as selfish in entering the war
as was England -a matter of preservation of ourselves
find our, future.
"far as friendliness' with Canada and Canadians i ;
ci nccrncd, ouo could hardly wish for more pleasant inter
national relations than now exist. Naturally there are
sumo English people in Canada, jealous, of our industrial
iriowth, our business efficiency, and our comparative pros
perity, "who we find it difficult to like; and lliere'are also
home varieties of Americans who make themselves obnox
ioujno matter where they are encountered.' Hut those
people are in the minority and will be increasingly so.
Canada is a wonderful country with untold opportunities
and possesses an admirable citizenship. II. is gratifying
that many Americans and much American capital are
taking a prominent part in promoting its line growth and
development into a greater province.
