A demonstration on thinning
was held two or three years ugo
in the J. F. Slover orchard. On
the trees thinned to u distance of
'eight- to 10 inches, 22 1 (I applet!
wero removed from each tree. On
the six to eight Inch thinning,
1 4 'Hi apples were pulh-d ; and on
the, four to five- inch spaces, 5uU (
apples were pulled.
"The fi-8 Inch thinning gave a
gross sale value of approximately
JMUt an acre," the county agent
staled, "and the until tuned trees
returned a groi-s sale value of
?:jiu) an acre. That part of the
orchard thinned 8-lti inches yield
ed only slightly less than the fi-8
inch thinning. The 4-5 inch thin
ning yielded considerably less
than Ihe G-Jt thinned trees. This
.shows that il' a grower makes any
mistake, it will be to his profit
to take off a few too many tip-'
pies rather than too few."
The thinning is done hy hand,
and big orchards now have crews
working in (hem that range from
1 f to ".'(i persons, including men
and women, boys and girls. J.
Slover expects to spend $t;(Hi thin
ning apples on one of liis an
acre orchards. He figures that
the thinning operation nets h'ni
more profit than any other oper
ation in producing his crop, ac
