OUT OUR WAY
By. WILLIAMS
4,': '' And now comes the Union Stock Show, "bigger and bel
ter than ever." To those who have attended the stock
tshoxv in previous years no such promise is necessary.
They know it will be imminently worth while for all of
JSastern Oregon. The show should enjoy a record crowd
this year.
; If railroad crossing markers and danger signals were
taken as seriously as detour signs, motoring could lie made
mucin less hazardous. Thanks to the highway construction
,'dft" the Old Oregon Trail, grade crossings between Ontario
;irtd Portland, outside of towns, have been reduced to zero
thereby protecting those who often will not protect theni
elves. Road construction that forces safety is becoming
a modern requirements
Chns. P. Stewart's prediction in a recent dispatch from
Washington that Coolidge would be a candidate for re
election in 1928 gives the natural conclusion of a political
writer, but it's a bit previous in view of the fact that
jnany things can happen in the next three years. The
Country is thoroughly "sold" on Coolidge today and if he
Continues along his present course of public economy and
efficiency he' Should HavtiMUtlo"dilTlt;ulty itting through'
the next presidential election. Existing business condi
tions during election year will have much to do with the
public's attitude toward Coolidge when the time comes. And
Ave hope those conditions are so prosperous that he'll bo
;rindc a unanimous choice.
jr." CORVALLiS' COMMUNITY HOTEL.
'; Corvallis has just celebrated the opening of their, new
hotel and now offer to the traveling public a stopping
place that is without a superior outside .of the larger
cities. No city in Oregon needed additional hotel facilities
more and no city will use the now hotel to better adyitnl
hgo, agricultural college activities making such a com
munity center a particular necessity. Corvallis is to b-
congratulated on giving to the public and the college such
Accommodations.
- The new hotel, the way it was financed and built, forms
'hit interesting story of community enterpiise and eo-opera-Jfon.
Although not the most desirable way for a city to
weeiue n new hotel, it is sometimes the only way, and
Corvallis may have been confronted with such an emerg
X'ncy. The money, over ?;i00,()00, was raised entirely by
jMibscriplions to stock by the citizens of Corvallis. It i ;
their hotel a community proposition through and through.
s a community effort it is an outstanding .success; as an
individual investment it is doubtful if the direct returns in
rdolhirs and cents will ever be very pleasing to the stock
jholders. l''or some unknown reason, that seems to be the history
of hotel enterprises that are put over co-opeiatively by a
community. There are exceptions, of course, but in mit t
instances the stockholders seldom get a return on their
investment that is adequate and very frequently they are
J'orccd to relinquish their stock tit. much less than its cost
,'ind look upon the loss as a contribution to the city's let
4eiment. Eventually the bond holders, not the community,
t'Xxn the property at much less than replacement cost. The
chief compensation is in the fact that, the hotel remains
'i good, adequate memorial to the loyalty and community
'.spirit of the city whose visitors it entertains.
! Whenever any other solution of the hotel pioWcm is
possible, promotion as a civic enterpiise is ceitainly to be
Avoided in the aveiage small city. As a las! resort, it can
'be undertaken. If it was the last resort for Coivallis, we
hope the future success of the hotel will make it the ex
ception that proves the rule.
