Coolidge Expected to
Be Candidate in TJ28
(Continued from Tngo One.)
he's permitted this information to
leak out through "aduitalst ra
tion spokesmen" which is the
way presidents transmit to the pub
lic tniorination they wish dissem
iuled bin prefer net to urtlculale
personal!) .
It's doubtful If a single politi
cian in Washington isn't certain
the president would have an
nounced it already, if he didn't
want another term. He Isn't as
uncommunicative as all that.
There are plenty of good reasons
why he shouldn't say he does want
it, If he does. There's no Imagin
able reason why he shouldn't say
he doesn't want It, if he doesn't.
On the com rary, in the hit ter
event, lie could clear the ground
; and improve ins party's prospects
i by expressing himself.
I
The question, "Can he get au-
! other term?" Is different. If he'll
take his chances with the voters.
And If this were U'S he could
get the nomination.
The old line Itepubllcun leaders
don't like him but the voters evi
dently do. While that lasts the
old liners will have lu go oil mak
ing the best of him.
If, however, he loses his hold on
the voters, by uny chance, the
party leaders will be tickled to
death to throw him overboard. In
other woids. they won't let him
, have the l yi'S nomination.
j He won't be like Taft, who, when
lie lost his grip on (he voters, still
held it Oil the partv leaders.
I
If, thin, the country still seems
as well disposed toward Cooiidge
three years hence as today, he'll
have everything his own way in the
1 HI'S convention, ami assuredly
he'll help himself io a renomina
lion. 'Maybe he'll be as popular then
as he Is now. Then again, maybe
he won't. Three years is a long
time for public sentiment to stay
put in a republic like this.
Something may happen. Or
perhaps the people will lire of so
much conservatism, wit hunt any
thing In particular happening. In
that event If lie loses enough of
his popularity Cooiidge will be
liminated automatically.
The old line itepubllcun leaders
won't try to force him on the
electorate. The electorate forced
him on them Instead. Hut if lie
lives and keeps his healt h and
doesn't get a reiiomination. It
won't be because lie doesn't want
it.
The politicians are just pretend
ing lo wonder about him and
wishing they hud a HI tie better
reason for doing it.
