llefore the actual filming of the

deal of careful research work was
neeesnary on the part of the pro

It will no doubt be oT interest to
know --or the erudo methods that
wore ued by Uie early gold miners.
Tin- manner of getting gold out
of the creek beds was pari leularly
primitive, owing to the lack of ;ide-
inuie faellitie on the part of the
miners. The big Idea was to get
the gold before somebody else
I could get It, nnd consequently, the
crudest methods were resorted to.
The mining operations took place
along the small water courses of
the region. Water was Indispensable-
in the crude placer operallons
of the early pioneers. When they
could not use the actual current of
the stream to separate the particles
of gold from the soli, they diverted
ihe si ream Into ditches mid sluices.
The sluices were long troughs,
fitted together end to end, like iile
pipe. Across the bottom of the
rlulces were the rifle burs, or sap
lings nailed llo the bottom boards.
I'he material dug from the claim

Jack Pickford Film
Showing at
Sherry s Today.
Not even the most credulous per
son would look for the end of the
world to begin in a smull country
town, yet that Is exactly what hap
pens In Jack Picklord's new photo
play, entitled "Waking Fp the
Town," at Sherry:
Practically it 1 1 of the uctlon in
this picture lakes place in a thriv
ing little country town, the pro.
vlm-lal spirit of which does much
to develop the story. There is a
simplicity and reullMti -pres-sed in
the sets and locale which oilers
an interesting contrast to the elab
orate com! time plays that have been
holding ho import ant a place on
the screen of late.
One distinction, however, mast
no to "Waking l'p ihr Town." it
boasts the most unusual set ever

interior of the hero's home, con
trasting with the elaborate . man

with the over-furnished quarters

alter fortune smiles upon him. In
thlH set everything works by elec
tricity, even the stairs. Then are
also the itainhew Call, and .many
beautiful exterior scenes graced by
the magic touch of the cameraman.
The rustic simplicity of ihe picture
give It an unusual charm.
