which never before hns been

' l-'rom the imim-iuorlat, or rather
since automobile demons! rulers
and cars became famous for dare
devil accomplishment, many at
tempts have been recorded to
climb DiIh hill. . Ami up to the
present time, there were simply
marks searing the steep hillside,
noi Ins thf dual resting place of
other cars thul tiled.
Dusevoir went over on the first
at tempi. It was impossible to
tuke a straight course up the side
of the hill, because of the fact
tliut for a distance of four teet,
the slope praci Icully st rate hi up

then to the right, until finally,
to ilie amazement of several hun

on the side of the May Shore High

and disc wheels, with only the top
and windshield removed for safe
ty. Heavy chains were necessary
to obtain sufficient traction for the
pull, and even with these, several
times It appeared to spectators
that tlie car would surely slide
from safety to the bottom of tlie
hill below.
Dusevoir's achievement with the
Star car is little short of unbe
lievable to Ran l-'ranciso nuto
nioblle men who, doubting, jour
neyed to-the foot of the hill to
witness the stunt themselves. They
were dnly convinced, as were thou
sands of motorists, by actually
seeing the lit 1 le car perched on
tnptof the grade.
Ibisevolr added this climb to a
list of famous western hills be
has successfully tockhd with the
Star car. Its grades and cross
grades, he stated, were even more
precipitous than those of I.os
Angeles famous "Pickle Hill,"
which was climbed for tlie first
time a- few weeks ago by the same
driver. The ntraight-up grade of

The hill is a well known climb.
A few motorcycles, ridden by the
best riders in I he country, have
successfully made the grade. It
is tifti tally on the opposite, side
of the slope upon which the T7"
figures are mounted, but Is far
steeper. It faces one of the great
traffic arterlals out of Sm l-'ran-cisco,
and Is near "South City."

die of last summer, the touring
car they used was the only one
in their country nml tlie only car
that ever successfully left llroken
dlill and got safely through to Lake
Tanganyika.
Food for two weeks had to be
carried, beside complete cooking
and sleeping equipment, while gas
oline and extra food had to be
sent' on ahead by 40 carriers. In
addition to the tremendous weight
of equipment, four persons were
carried in the car through "tracks
cut through the brush, full of pits
and holes."
The first day out the only road
was a native footpath, ut times
hardly visible and every few miles
H dambo (plain) was encountered,
which is very marshy ground with
u bog in the middle and which be
comes a veritable river in tlie
rainy season. Often a native boy
had to be sent ahead to recon
noitre and 'then tlie car wns pilot
ed through.
Though the diary of the trip
contains more than .innn words,
only the most interesting exiracts
will be taken.
On July 22, grass from sis to
seven feet high, intermingled with
bushes, was encountered, to' say
nothing of ant hills and holes which
shook the car to its very limit. The
sun vns so hot that the gasoline
had to be completely covered by
the equipment.
On tiie following day the car be
came stuck in a hog and it was
necessary to send buec for n dozen
natives to push it out. It never
rains but it pours, it is said, ami
next 12-foot elephant grass was
encountered which filled I he rad
iator with grass seed,, so that it
was necessary to stop every few
miles and dislodge the seeds to
prevent the motor from boiling.
Jailer this same day, the party i
ran neross a great bush fire. . -
flames from horhton and only
avoided danger by hitting a I urge
patch of ground where the. jfraiw
hud already been burned.
Tint next day the only thing e-x-oitlug
w;u meeting a jackal, n wild
cur and python ero.-vd their path
and a group of baboons which the
superstitious natives never kill tor
fear or bringing bad luck.
"The next drty," writes Mrs. .Tol
ly, "my hustNind went over the
car which bad extraordinary little
the matter with it."
Mrs. Jolly explained In her diary
that they often encountered great
patches of burnt down timber
land. The natives burn down miles
of trees to fertilize the ground a
huey way to prepare tlie Koutid in
sUvid, of hut ing it.
A raft made of old gasoline cans
ferried the car across u river the
next day. Two days later another
river was encountered and the
wheels of the car went through a
bridge up to the axle nml it took
two hours to unpack the car and
gel across. About sis miles fur
ther the same day a second bridge
was encountered, and the same
si renuoUH exercise was needed to
get the car out of the rotten tim
bers. The party camped under Mount
Huna, the highest mountain in
northern Rhodesia, after strenu
ous work on the bridges. In the
small settlement where ihey un
packed for the night there were 40
Airedales thnt were used lo hunt
lions.
About two days later they struck
a bad belt of teetse-fly and it was
all they could do to keep tht bites
off the dog the bite of the teetse
fly being fatal to a dor.
The following day the party had
to cut down a numbar of trees and
build a 2U foot stretch of cordu
roy road. They sh6t some do
llclous pheasants for lunch.
For 25 miles the next day the
car wns hardly ever out of low
gcar, us the Journey was continual
ly up hill sand hills, which made
ihe going most difficult.
Killing a zehrn. walking five
miles to hunt game only lo find
a solitary pelican, crossing more
bridges and helping a sick man to
go lou miles to a doctor consti
tuted the outstanding nd ventures
during the remainder of the trip.
