ON THE DECLINE
"The nationwide campaign tie
American Hallway A'sochilinn and
the individual railways are con
ducting to reduce accidents at
highway crossings Is hearing fruit.'
sas (he Uailway Age. "This is
shown by tin railway accident sta
tist ics for u entire year 19 1 4
which were Issued by the inter
state Commerce commission ;Ms

tional Automobile ' Chamber of
Commerce reganllng uie nil tuner
of persons killed In automobile ac
cidents Vast year.
"A very large majority of all fa
talities at highway crossings are
now due to collisions "bet ween
trains and automobiles. The total
number of persons killed at high
way grade crossings in 11123 was
'."JtiK, while in lit 24 it was 2143.
This was not n large reduction, huti
in considering its significance it j
must be remembered that the nam-j
her of automomobilcs being ope-.
rated and the number of accidents!
of all kinds in which automobiles
were involved substantially increas
ed. The total number of persons
killed in ail automobile accidents
in was Id. 4 52, while in t!(24 it
was 17.S4f. .Since the number of
fatalities lit highway crossings de
clined while the total number oT
fatal automobile accidents'lncreiis
ed. t necessarily follows that the
proportion or all ratal nutomobile
accidents which occurred at high
way crossings was Aubstautially re
duced. "There, were reductions in fatal
railway accidents of almost all
kinds. The total number of per
sons killed declined from 7S3T, in
t't2;t to AIM 7 in 1!24. Tolal tres-pai-sers
kllh-d declined from 2M9
to 2'i2l; tolal employes from D4
to 1470. The number of passen
gers killed increased from 14 3 to

ipally of those who met death at
highway crossings, declined from
24S3 to 23H."
