COACH BUILT
LIKEpiN
Sometimes, automobile niann-
fucturora build oven better than
hey anticipated, und such has
roven the case with tho oiusnio-
bilif 6-passenser couch. Although
entirely unintentional on the part
of tho body designers, it naa ue-
elopcd that the coach quickly
nd easily can be transformed ln-
perfect I'ullman . sleeping
conipnrt ment.
Tho discovery of the possibiliti
es In this direction was made by
Olds mob lie dealers on the Pacific
coast where a 1,000 mile drive is
considered Just a little jaunt. Tho
looping compartment was tested
out In a drive from Seattle. Wn.,
to San Francisco and return.
Clumping: the seating arrange
ments of the Oldsmoblle coach
into a bed Is somewhat similar to
the familiar procedure of muk
Ingr up the lower berth In a Pull
man sleeper. The rear seat cush
ion ts first removed. This dls-!
oses two wood screws that hold .
the back upholstery in place. He-
moving' these screws, this back
lection can be raised off tho re
taining hooks and lifted out of
place. The rear seat cushion then
Is replaced, with tho front of the
ushion placed to the rear to Kve
the proper slope fo a pillow." Tho
back section then is placed be
tween the front- und rear seatH,
the front portion resting on the
foot rail which has been raised to
a perpendicular position.
It Is necessary to remove the
bolls from the hinges of tho front
seatt backs and replace them with
bolts und wing nuts so that they
can be . easily removed. I hese
bolts removed, the backs of tho
front seats are laid on top of thu
seat proper, bring up the front
seat to the level of the remainder
of the bed. This urrangement
makes a comfortable full length
bed upholstered with springs.
Tho first test of the arrange
ment was made several days ago
by A. H. Tyson, President oT the
Oldsmoblle Motor Company of Se
attle, and Norman K. Storm, aUto -
mobile editor of the Seattle Post
nlelllgencer. Kach driving alter- ,
nalely whilev the other slept, they I
made the 934 mile trip to Sun
Kniinciseo in exactly 34 hours, el
apsed time, and without at any
time breaking the speed luws of
the slates or municipalities
through which they passed. Tho
return, over another route 926
miles Ion a wus. made In au. Ir2
hour.s. The run beat the best
train time between tho two cities
and was made t a cost of seven-
tenths of a cent per tulle person.
During the trip tho driver s seal
was not utilized as a bed, so that
one man could drive while the
other slept. This arrangement
:ave ample loom for one to rest.
Slorm wrote a descriptive story of
the drive from which tho follow
ing excerpts were tuktn:
While the writer drove, Tyson
anted ,s Pullman porter and in a
tew minutes had transformed the
rear seat cushions und the iif,iit
froitt seat into a wonderful bed.
A steeping bug and robes were
brought out and Tyson wont to
bed to be called out of his sleep
at 10 p. m. He then took the
wheel and Invited me to try the
bed which I found to be excellent.
In a few minutes I waa ' Hiet ping
HoiiiH.'ly and did not awaken until
two hours later for my lucn ul the
wheel.
"Our trip proved lo our uat In
fliction that the Oldsmoblle ';oach
can i r transformed Into a Min
ing compartment without lnt;rlcr
lM v lth the dri it'? seat, and
"wlih two experienced drivers, a
iaMy can (ravel almost ,cont'nu-
outly for an indefinite period
wlthiout discomfort to thu occu

ably wus demonstrated by this
pulr of travelers who arrlvel back
home at 6:30 In the morning, and
at 8:30 were at their respcLlvu
desks prepured for a day ofregu
