conclusion ot tho wnolo matter: Fear Qod, and Keep his com

Twelve and one-hall' billions was the value of the farm
products last year. Quite a business notwithstanding there
were some troubles connected with it.
THE STORE CLERK AND YOU
It makes quite a difference what kind of service you get
from the people who hand over goods to you in a retail store.
Do they just hand them over, naming tho price and then
turning away with a kind of indifferent look?
' Or are they so anxious to sell to you, that they do not
stop to consider what your wishes and needs are, but just
try to put over on you whatever they think you will buy,
and do it in the least possible time?
. Those kinds of service you frequently see in stores whon
you go away from home, where the clerks never saw you
before and never expect to see you 'again.
When you buy stuff in La Grande you get personal at
tention, because the home store people know you, or at lcastl
wish to do so. They consider not merely selling you thU
lime, but pleasing you so well that you will come again.

Some one, as a popular cartoonist frequently reminds us,
is always taking the joy out of life; and among the most im
placable purveyors of gloom are the concocters of( statistics.
Most of us can take figures or leave them alone; but these
infatuated persons ace helpless addicts of the vice, and llu
issuance of , a statistical report is enough to send them on n
debauch of analysis and deduction.. They are mildly intoxi
cated, for example, by the mere announcement in a ccnsu.i
bureau bulletin to the effect that during the year 1923 the
American public spent 10,fi00,0(l() for emblems and insignia
of tho multifarious organizations of the country.
Well, what of it? What if this docs corroborate t'.ie
traditional charge that the American' is by habit a "jincr,"
a slave to the gregarious instinct and a psychological urge
,to "belong" to something or other, especially if membership
endows him with a glittering uniform? The wearing of a
(society's regalia is surely an innocent diversion, often .sym
bolic of a lofty idealism. Resides, there is nothing that
has a more beneficial effect upon sufferers from an in
feriority complrx. Let a man be conscious of his obscurity
.in tho social scheme, or of subordination to a stronger pe
rsonality in his family relations, ami what could bo mine
fcolacing to his mind, more stimulating to his spirit, than the
privilege of apicaring from time to time in uniform and
with a sword, even astiide a charger? Democracy docs
make life n rather drab affair, and an occasional parade of
richly caparisoned citizens is really in the nature of a public
service. We have known men who satisfied desires in this
direction by hoarding the badges and buttons acquired at
political convention!'..
t Anyway, why this implication of the statisticians that
the traffic in insignia is a deplorable extravagance? Can it
be that their disclosure to inspired by the women, a subtle
act of reprisal for department of commerce report reciting
feminine expenditures for face powder and lipsticks?
