WALLOWA COUNTY'S GOLD MINE.
. There may or may not be in Wallowa county large du
pcnits of the valuable yellow metal for which so many
people slave their lives away, but there-is in the existence
of, the Wallowa Lake region a natural resource which is
just beginning to lie tapped and which can mean more to
the progress and prosperity of Wallowa and Union counties
that several rich mines could possible produce. The Wal
lowa Lake tourists' attractions will mean much in the next
few years to the country in Wallowa county that must be
traversed before a visitor reaches this Wonderland. It
should mean much in new population, agricultural develop
ment, and industrial growth. How much it will mean de-
pQnds entirely upon how much eilort Eastern Uregon w:il
put into the job of selling the nation on the wonders of
Wallowa.

i Contrary to repeated reports 'the Inst horse and driver
to lie affrighted by one of the fruits of modern inventive
and industrial genius have not departed from this globe.
A man whose horse .ran away upon first looking upon a
steam roller described the engine as "an unsightly iron mon
ster, with n boiler, cab and a fire and fuel chamber, mount
. .cd upon large, heavy rollers and emitting loud and unseemly
noises in its operation." ''.''
:! With n little editing this mnn's description would have
served admirably as the description a country squire might
have given fifteen years ago of a "one-lung" automobile
Which had raced by him in a cloud of dust at a terrific
speed of eight miles an hour. Such incidents are provoca
tive of much laughter and derision on the part of a genera
tion which through constant association has learned to look
upon the steam roller and the automobile as commonplace
objects.
