ber market has been noticeable
during the lost week und the vol
ume of trade Is generally reported
to be fully up to seasonal nor
mnl, though retailers ure not buy
ing for spring stocks on the ac
customed scale, says the American
Lumberman, Chicago, The reu
boii for the recent Increase Is un
doubtedly the mild weather which
has prevailed In the north und
large sections of tho middle west, I
and which has stimulated building
activities and other outdoor work.
The continued excellent building

Industrial demand and the brisk
ness of export markets combine
with tho first factor in creating
a satisfactory situation,
Douglas fir Is the only wood
whleh can not be said to be In
good position, clue 'more largely
to the heavy production in which
the mills have been engaged than
to actually poor demand. Double
shifts have now . been abandoned
on the west coast and many mills
have restricted 'their running time
to four or five days a week: and
this curtailment of o ltpnt is ex
pected to have a - strengthening
effect on the market. There is
very little fir In stock, and t he
larger mills, which have not lost
their confidence in tho future,
continue lo hold their prices firm.
H is mostly among- the smaller
mills, removed from tidewater ami
arc not getting the benefit or
cargo business, that prices have
softened. Any improvement in tho
rail market will quickly bring a
strengthening of prices.
Western pines, on the other
hand, are nninng the strongest
woods. While current demand for
these has dropped off a little,
until recently the call was so
heavy as to decrease stocks of
many Items to a point of abso-1
lute scarcity.
Southern pine demand Is on
par with output, and the market j
remains very strong. Prices have
shown no reportable changes for
some time, b it the tendency is
