. The war Isn't over, in Wusiiing
lon. In fact, it hu.sn'1 even be
gun. If you don't believe it, go into
the public schools of the capital
unci study the text books that ure
bring used I" the "education" of
the city's youth.,
Study particularly their histories
and their geographies ror It was
history and geography the lnte war
was supposed to have changed.
There you will find that" "The
German Kmplru consists of 22
separate slates" of which Prussia
is the largest. That "The king of
Prussia Is also the emperor or
kuiser of Germany." That "the
laws are made by uu imperial par
liament," and so on.
' Or, If your interests take you
outside the status or Germany
since the war, you may read that
"Austria Hungary is u monarchy,"
tlHit "the cmporor or czar Is abso
lute monarch of Uussla."
In the geographies of the capi
tal schools, vintage of 1014, St. Pe
tersburg Is still the capital of Rus
sia, there Is no Polund or Czecho
slovakia, and the nutlonal boundaries-
shown on the school wall
maps are the same as before the
educational Hip Van Winkles con
trolling the Washington schools
went to sleep.
t Prubably there Is no other city
or stale where such a condition ex
ists, or would long bo permitted to
exist, except in Washington, Dis
trict of Columbia.
. It wouldn't exist long hem if
cither Washington, or the District,
had the say-so.
Washington, as a city, is merely
a geographical fiction itself, its
boundaries being co-extensive with
those of the District,
And the District is merely a step
child of tho federal government,
with a paternal congress doling out
nickels and dimes lor It seduca-
tion, while lavishing hundreds of
millions on "development" projects
elsewhere where the people havo
votes.
The rt'shlenls or Washington not
only have no. vole for president,
they have no voice in Haying what
simll be spent on their schools.
That lies in the decisions .or tho
budget bureau of tin; jiatlonul gov
fiDiA'ienf and tmj- congress.....
The District can't even tax Itself
to buy the .books that . wil tyach.
