to put his plan of government -ownership into effect, it

This is so' because the share of taxes now paid by. the
railroads, amounting on the iiveraKC throughout the state

remaining property in Oregon, since the railroads, if gov
ernment owned, would pay no taxes at all.
Total .taxes in Union county in 1023 were $(100,010.78.
Out of this total the railroads paid $124,534.33, or 18 per
cent of the total.
When Union county voters go to the polls November
4th they should not forget that a vote for La Follette is
,a vote for the increase of their taxes by IS per cent.

Nearing the End
Voters have boon bombarded with political arguments
from all aides for the past few weeks, but the campaign
is now in its last slnjre and while many minds have been
made up, there are those possibly who are still undecided.
As a closing Argument in tjie present campaign we ask
every man and woman to think of the national condition
that has always prevailed when the Republican party was
retired. The unemployment and slow business conditions
have ever been present when the Democratic party was in
power, with the exception of the Wilson administration
when n world war caused all nations to buy anything
America had to sell at an exorbitant price.
When you go into that booth to vote look at the situa
tion in a broad manner, admitting that n government is
perfect, but ask yourself if it is not a fact that under
Republican rule we have nil had work, we have all had a
good living, we have all had money to spend.
Then view the periods when Republicans were not in
power. The bread lines, the soup kitchens, the unrest
combined to make the United States a nation of dissastis
fird and uncomfortable people.
Vote the Republican ticket on Tuesday. It is the safe
and sane thing to do.

Roaring Rufus Raises Rumpus
We thought the days of the soap-box campaign were
over in Portland, but wc were mistaken, for in comes
Roaring Rufus Holman into the mayor's fight, lie conies
with his stinger out; he comes with his roaring apparatus
all repaired and working gingerly.
The roar of Rufus bleats out his platform which is the
platform of other candidates who met defeat lerause
people thought they were insincere. Roaring Rufus would
have Portlanders vote "for lower carfares and lower tele
phone rates without wage reduction." He would not only
give I'orll.nid all or that, but he would also throw in for
good measure "cheap power," "new industries," "more pay
rolls," "clean administration," "protected homes and sub
urban development."
Of course Rurus can do nothing of the kind, and prob
ably no one knows it any better than does Rufus, but he
probably figures the old way that a sucker is born everv
minute and most of Portland Voters are suckers.
