ton, to reside permanently. Mr. Appleby nerved two years
as lieutenant of infantry during the World war in this
country and in France. , Mrs. Appleby is a graduate of
Smith college, Northampton, Mass., anil was on the art
department faculty in that college prior to the war. They
are residing at the Foley hotel until their household goods
arrive from Des Moines.'
The addition of. Mr. Appleby to the Evening Observer
staff causes no' changes in the present force. Mr. O. K.
Moran remains as advertising manager, Mr. O. N. Skiff
as city editor, Bud Lynch as -reporter. Miss Evelyn Guhle
man" ns bookkeeper, Mrs. Thclmn Walker as circulation
manager, Miss Mildred Mulhollnnd as society editor, Slater
Whidden as collector. In the mechanical department the
force includes Milton Price, foreman; W. T. Long, E. L.
Evans and Boy McNees, linotype operator; George Lock
wood, advertising compositor; Archie Miller, pressman,

Our old friend, Addison Bennnett, who for many years
. has bt-en :t distinct part of Oregon newspaper life, lias
passed on. His pleasant smile anil his happy manner will
no longer grace newspaper circles; his clever pen will no
longer entertain the Oicgonian reatleis.
Yes, he was old, as years go, but even so, it seems
that Addison Bennett should have been permitted to live
on and on, for his life was a bright light to his fullowmen.
We knew him at Irrigon when he published a weekly
newspaper called the Optimist. His "Babbitvillu" column
was high class humor. Like many of the newspaper boys
he went to Iho meti-opolitan newspapers and for a mim-Ix'l-
of years he has been a special writer on the Portland
Oregoiiian. Stockmen of Eastern Oregon will rememltcr
his visits to the sliKkgroweis' conventions and the deep
interest he took in the big Eastern Oregon country.
Added to the increased mail this first of the month
comes the notices for the new paved districts asking the
property owners if they elmo.se to pay in cash or Ban
