If he bo thirsty, give I1I111 water to drink. Proverbs 25:21,
Pershing
Today . General John Jacob Pershing will join the loiifr,
illustrious lust of former comnmnderg-in-chief of the army
of the United States.
This nation should pause for a moment 011 that day
and, while paying a small meed of tribute to a great Amer
ican while he still lives, consider what this generation of
Americans owes to the men who more than any other
class made the United States of today possible. :
What would this country be todny if there had been
110 'Washington, .no Grant, no Miles, no Pershing? True,
perhaps the places of all of these could have been filled
" )y;othcrs.i JSut it was Washington who led the colonial
trohps to victory, Grunt who headed the Union hosts in
iiity-five, Pershing whom the American crusaders fol
lowed in France. '
. Pershing: commanded the largest army that ever fought
under the Stars and Stripes. Companies, regiments, divi
sions, armies they marched upon the enemy in France
until more than two million troops were at Pershing's com
mand, while more than that many were in camp on home
soil. '
f "Illackjack" is beloved by Americans today as a great
military leader who served the nation most faithfully and
vaiorously whon the call came. Like Grant, there was
little of the professional soldier about him. He has abun
dantly earned the right to spend his remaining years free
if the responsibility of official duties.
Canadian Conservation
'That the lumber industry in Dritish Columbia is ex
periencing a phenomenal boom is good news ; but still more
gratifying is it that while the sawmills are working over
time culling timber for shipment to all parts of the world
foresters are on guard to see that the woodlands of the
province arc not recklessly devastated. For the first time
in the history of lumbering in North America conservation
is being practiced while there is still time to make it ef
ftctive. It is true that Conservation of timber resources
is also being practiced in Alaska, hut Die situation there
is somewhat different from what it is in V.ritish Columbia.
In the Canadian province lumbering is an important busi
ness while in Alaska the forests are in the possession of
the government and there has been comparatively little
cutting of the timber. ' '
The lumbermen of lliitish Columbia are treating the
forests as a cixip, which, after having been harvested, is
to be replanted. Heretofore lumbermen have handled the
forests as if they were a mine; they took the position
that the timber should be removed as quickly as possible,
ji.st as one removes the minerals from a mine with the
least delay, and that once the woodland was exhausted of
ni' i(s tree growth its usefulness as a producer of timber
was over. The consequence of this practice has been that
forest lands have been swept bare anil the saw-mills de
pendent 011 them have gone out of business.
In liritish Columbia they are proceeding with the as
sumption that there is always to be a timber supply and
that lumbering is to lie n permanent business. Kventually
all countries will have to preserve their forests in the same
manner if they hope to escape a timber famine.
