To the greatest number; the American homo is the
purest symbol of nationality. Around it circle most of
those things we like to remember. None but the very
few expatriates view life abroad without wistfully casting
back in their mind to the virtues and superiorities of the
American home. .
The cardinal element of the American home is its self
sufficiency. There is' substantial reason for that. When
- this wonderful land was colonized it had to become either
the prey of adventurers or the resource of constructive
'workers. Only by courageous effort, by a supreme de
votion to the means of livelihood was the family established
as the ancestor of this teeming people of great riches and
superb achievement.
The foundation is in. those homes, and ever muni be;
that in why the tradition of the American home is such
nn integral part of American life, as individual as any na
tional characteristic can be, and as wholesome and pernm
nent as anything man has created.;,

Finally Up to the Court
After listening for weeks to testimony of alienists that
vould, make it appear that the two young men in Chicago
who confessed to kidnaping and killing a boy are irre
sponsible, now comes alienists for the state saying that the
blnyers show no evidence of mental disease.
' Of : bourse there are shades of meaning on tho technical
terms tjiat mnj have no importance with laymen yet may
be of the highest significance to the experts., Allowance
has to, be made for honest differences of opinion in tho
medical profession as in any other. After making all such
t llowahces, however, tho average individual will feci fairly
safe in falling' back upon common sense and judging the
defendants by their action. "Who shall decide when doe
tors disngree?" Those who hear the evidence, of course.
The 'alienists who in this wise keep their feet on ,the
ground.. and express themselves as nearly as possible in
.pining terms not drifting loo far from common sense )
will make the better impression, the public has no doubt
that the court will bo ublc to analyze the testimony of the
alienists. Most judges have a lot of common sense
