Oregon Journal, logged the high
way from Portland to ' Wallowa
Luke. The following interesting
article appeared n- the automo
bile, section of the Journal.)
Truly thero Is no need for Oro
gonlans to go outside of their statu
to enjoy a genulno vucatlon. The
trouble with many of our resi
dents who go elsewhere- is that
they are not acquainted with the
beauties of their own common
wealth. Wo should bo thankful
that much of Oregon Is us God
made it centuries ago, and yet so
near the main highways that we
cun enjoy it. .
One of our beauty spots, still
in Its natural state, Is- Wallowa
Hjiko. In the northeastern corner
of tho state. This beautiful body
of water, and the scenic - hills
which lower above? It ami sur
round It. have recently been chris
tened "Wallowa liko Wonder
land." a name full of meaning und
truth.
The writer was privileged rec
ently to visit this marvelous coun
try in a Hupmobilo sedun furnish
ed by the Munley Auto company
of Tort land, "Hup" distributors
for Oregon.

east over the Columbia river high
way and the "Old Oregon Trail to
Ui Grande, 290.6 miles from here.
The entire drive was made in high
gear and with great ease, the car
responding to the slightest touch

desire their services. The resort
Is being efficiently managed by

improvement along this route for
tourists, namely ono re signs In
Kntcrprlso and Joseph showing
tho route to the lake. Outside, of
these two cities tho highway Is
well marked.
As brunch roads open north
from Enterprise Into lowlston,
Idaho, and east Into tho Snake
river 'region, this district will be
accessible from a greater area. At
present, all travel must be drawn
In from ln Grande.
Being 370 miles from Portland.
Wallowa l.uko Is a little too fur
for a pleasant week-end trip, but
It s not too distant from Eastern
Oregon points. This lako resort
ought to be patronized liberally by
persons living in tho entire district
from Walla Walla and Pendleton
to tinker and Ontario. The pos
sibilities of this resort are limited
only to tho amount of patronage
it receives.
Tho Hupmobile make tho entire
round 'trip from Portland to the
lake without mishap, and would
have' mado tho entire journey in
high gear, had the driver not con
tinuously yielded to the tempta
tion to "top along the highway to
view the beautiful-scone and take
scores of pictures.
The ear averaged IS' miles to
the gallon on the trip, which In
cluded ull the slow driving while
sightseeing In the many cities en
route. While traveling through
through the sagebrush district to
t'matilla on days when sun did
Its bent to beat all previous rec
ords, the engine ran perfectly
and smoothly and did. not over
heat. No carburetor - adjustment
was needed on the entire trip, the
drive ranging from the low alti
tude, of Portland to 4205 feet
while crossing the Blue, mountains.
