when he shot his wife to death' in the presence of' their
ten-year-old daughter and then with' the same gun killed
himself causes an attempt to analyze a man who is guilty
f;f such heinous crime. The only conclusion to be drawn
is that Horck was mentally wrong; that his ideas of life
were unsound and that his feeling for the woman who is
the mother of his three children never was anything but
brutal. The dead woman was good looking, came from ail
excellent family, and bore her cross in living with a demon
just , as many women do. But the horrible ending of an
energetic woman is too tragic for contemplation.
; The cause of jealousy has been advanced and there
may' be some foundation for that belief, but behind it all
the prime cause of the crime was a mentally unbalanced
man "honeycombed with streak after streak of pure cussed

f ; The Sugar Consumption
i. Judging from the case. of sugar, it is a reasonable con
clusion that Americans will have what they wan when they
want it without much consideraion or price. Facts About
Sugar, a trade journal of the sugar industry, is authority
tor the' statement that in the first six months of this year
jthiS country consumed- 6,247,000,000 pounds of the sweet.
Unmakes an-' average of about 56 pounds for every man,
.Woman; and child in the United States, a little more than
, two pounds a week per persons.
i . : ,-
In 1922 the average for tho first six months was about
I! pounds less than in the similar period of 1921, but the
flatter was about 2 pounds more each person, on the aver-!
;i.ge,consumed in the first half of last year. ' High water !''""' K",M' "

years price is lower than that of last year, but the differ
ence in consumption indicates that price is not an important
LftiCtor.
I A great many Venders likely' will disclaim using Hum
in any such quantity as tho statistics indicate may be at
tributed to each individual. l!ut sugar goes into a great
'Variety of things besides coffee ind tea cups, candy, ice
tream, cakes, pies and similar edibles familiar in all house
holds. The soft drink industry, which has had a gigantic
growth in the last few years, consumes enormous quanti
ties, of sugar. In the curing of meats thousands of tons
tire used annually. Numerous industries whoso products1
never enter the mouths of any -'person cannot get along
without sugar.
v But sugar is eaten many times without, the consumer
suspecting its presence in particular foods that would be
unpalatable without it. A large part of the verage of
.more than two pounds a week consumed by every Ameri
can is taken unwittingly, though it contributes to satisfy
ing the demand of tho nation's sweet tooth.
