Living Right Means Living Long
A Cleveland physician who is a personal friend and golf
companion of John D. Rockefeller predicts that Mr. Rocke
feller will live to be 100 years old. Many of us can ro
.member tho day not so far back when it was generally
known that Mr. Rockefeller was a sufferer from indiges
tion. A remark frequently heard was "what good is all
hi i money if he has to live on crackers and milk?" Manv
shfcbk their heads gloomily and predicted that he would not
cvjn encompass' the traditional three-score-and-ten years al
lotted to man, -but he has exceeded that limit by 15 years
and is so vigorous that his Cleveland physician does not
hesitate to say that he will reach the century mark.
l ine reason tor Mr. Kocketellcr remaining on earth so
long after the time croakers set for his demise more than
lilAily is his sane and orderly way of living. He once suf-
i feted from indigestion but does' no more.' lie may have
attune time been required to restrict his diet to "crackers
'any) milk" but he how can eat anything that is edible,
i According -to-the physician who says he will live many
yeftrs.longoiw We have m. knowledge of what Mr. Rockc-
j fejler's diet may have been at any time in his life, but we
ar certain that if conservation of his health required any
'Jinjiitation. he adhered to it strictly, 'In other words he did
: not try to eat bolognn sausage if his stomach said "only
crickets and milk, please." Even now, the medical man
i saya. the capitalist cats sparingly.
! "But that is not all his daily life i;; orderly and sane,
! mil on a schedule with a time for everything. He has time
': fop work und has time' for play and it probably is proper
arrangement of his labor, feeding and recreation that makes
'him hale and vigorous at an age when must men have
1 passed out of this life.

Only Five Lynchings
j In the first six months of thin year there were five
'lynchings. ' Five loo many, of course, but when compared
;with other years the sitfuifiennoo of the record becomes
apparent. In 1023 there were Hi lynrhiiiKS in the corres
'ponding period; in 1022. 30; in 1921, 3fi.
J , hn 40 years in which records have been kept there have
holj been bo few lynchinps in the first six months of any
year. Perhaps we are making rapid progress toward wip-
!ing out tins form of savagery and arc moving toward Hit
.condition wherein every person accused and convicted of
crime will be executed only under legal forms. At least
;ihit is tho goal to bo nought. The Males which broke
Avhjit was in -lfi commonwealths a good record were Florida
wifli two lynchings, Georgia with two and South Carolina
Aviyi one. - four of the cases the crime alleged was that
whjoh is regarded as particularly heinous and in the other
caatt.au officer of the law was killed.
cThc south has been especially opwu;etl to the promised
anti-Iynching law. If that section will persist in the riltt
course there will be no need of such an enactment. Kut
niiiteionary work is needed still in at lei;st the three states
in Kvhich within (lie period noted the prner function of
ine law was seized by mobs. U is livened that the senli
meM against lynching is growing in tho routh. The result
wohld support the truth of the claim. Yet llie need for
Ml Janti-lyacbing law will nut be removed until there aiv
no 'more lynchings. At the same time the .situation is
encouraging.
