used and rich milk, tho freshest
of eggs, and the most delightful
of flavorings. Here is the gen
eral recipe from which ajl the
other uduptations are made:
Rerfpo for All Cakes

flour one time, before measuring.
1 cup sugar
2 eggs '
3 teaspoons baking powder
i teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups Kpring patent flour
1 cup milk.
Cream s igar and shortening to
gether. Add eggs well beaten.
KlfO flour, baking powder and salt
together. Add alternate, with
tho milk to the f i rst ml xt uro.
Heat thoroughly.
Justly add the flavoring. Place
In two well greased layer paos
and bake 2! minutes in moderate
oven (350 F). This recipe makn
a two layer cake. For u cake
of three large layers double the
recipe.
IliittiY Icing.
1-3 cup butter
2 cups confectioner's sugar
2 to 2 tablespoons cream
Cream butter and add sugar
gradually, continuing the beating.
Thin with cream until right con
sistency to spread on cake. Iec
oratc with nuts and strips ot
angelica, or strips of citron may
be used instead.

orange flavoring for vanilla. Hake
in well greased muffin tins n
moderately hot oven (400 F.) for
20 minutes, lee with Hutter Ic

Marble Cuke.
To one-half of the plain cuke
recipe add 2 squares of melted
chocolate. Urop the chocolate
mixture in well .greased. uaf pun
alternately with plain cake mix
ture. Ruker 45 minutes in mod
erately slow oven (325 F.) Ice
with Hutter Icing and with wu
paper spread thin coating melted
chocolnte over icing.
Other variations may be mad
by adding spices or nuts to th
plain cake and also by varying
the kinds of icing used.
