TIIE OLD IIOME TOWN.
By Stanley
Tribute to Mr. Cochran .
i; La Grande witnessed a torch light procession and a '
' political rally last evening which .seemed as though history's
'I pages had been turned hack a number of years. It re-j
j: minded one of the time when men marched the streets for
3 their favorite party and carried the banners hearing' in-;
; scriptions th:it pleased them. The old-time marching clubs,
: Amazonian drills and slump speeches were recalled.
; The occasion for all of this old-time demonstration was
. the Cochran for Congress club holding a rally for the purp-1
; ose ot inducing lieorge l. Locliran ol l,a liiaiirtu to an-
i nounce his candidacy for the Republican nomination to
: congress from this district.
The meeting last night was a tribute to a J.a fJrande
man who claims the Crande Hondo as his birthplace and
who has. lived among the people of this valley during his
entire lifetime. That he should personally feel pleased
over the event is apparent, for when as many men and
women turn out as did last evening it is indicative of a
good community standing of himself and his family. I
La Grande is noted for honoring her home men which '
in itself is a civic achievement, and the gathering last;
evening which marched to the porch of the home of Mr.
. Cochran, joining with those who had traveled some (lis-1
tance to take part in the demonstration, showed plainly
uic jiii-iiu.-inijj m;m jui ihi. ocniioi and LIU! loyally oi me
people to one of their number who has combatted the strug
gle of life from a farm boy through country schools, then
through 'high school, on through Stanford university, ac
quiring an education in law, and then returning to the
valley of his birth where he has successfully practiced
Jaw and built up a law business.
The rally last evening was a very pretty tribute to
Mr., Cochran.

The Hunchback of. Notre Dame
. Whut a vivid mind Victor Hugo had; what a wonderful
-faculty for weaving into story the acts of mankind in his
..day. It is little wonder his works have lived. It is little I
wonder that the Hugo productions remain today in a class)
by themselves. This conclusion is quickly reached when'
one sees "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," now playing
at a l.a Grande (heater.
The story reflects the hardships of humanity in that
day and lime. It tells over and over again the oppression
of the poor, the in y madness of royally and the rich.
It brings up the problems of liiu as they were then when
people were under the oppressive heel of a wicked king,
when the meek and lowly had no voice in affairs and
scarcely dared breathe a discord to the general scheme of
.'life.
Hut in that age as today, the thread of love of man for
woman existed with all the tenderness, all the gailantry
that the human mind can encompass. The will lo .suffer
for those we love is the greatest outstanding feature
of this great story. And the hunchback, a remark
able character played by l,on Chancy, remembers the
kindly hand of helping humanity to the point that he com
mits murder to save the girl who ministered to him when
he lay dying at, the whipping rack. The church plays an
important part in this drama and (he 1 ai'k of knowledge
of that epoch impresses one deeply, for (he people were
to a large extent like dumb, driven cattle.
Hugo's plays are filled with action. Cruesome they
arc to a gieal degree, but il was giuesomeness that pre
vailed in those days and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
is bilking m no feature covered by the Hugo writings in
his several volumes. Il is a play that everyone should we.
for the comparison of life of the common people then
with the life led today will d oany American a world of
good.
