Ill .1913 we received tvf haulinjf a ton of frtlghtj
one rnile, 9.7 mills; foriuilinsr a passenger one fiile,
2(4.(1 In 1923. these ties were 1.285 and 3.035 .re
spectively. The 195 freight rate represents a re
duction of about ll under 19-1 and passenger fare
alxmt 8 under 1021.
InV)rder to earn enough gross revenue to purchase
a nu or injvic is necessary lor us to haul one ton
of frerjitjnnles; for a cross tie, 65 miles; a hand
lantern, yl miles; one ireigiu c;ir wheel, llli.n
and one monkey wrench 97 miles.
To pay for a day of track labor it is necessary to
haul" one ton of freight 230 miles. For a day's
wages of a freight train crew 2GS0 miles. For a
day's wages ot a machinist '1(51 miles. For a ton
of fuel 263 miles.
The railroads of the United States maintain the
lowest rates and the lowest capitalization per mile,
while paying the hijrhest wapes of any country in
the world.
So lonjr as the railroads' cost; of doinpr business re
mains at the present hi.uh level a general reduction
of freight and passanwr rates cannot safely be made.
Constinctive suggestions are always welcome.
