In the Old Havs of nienie Kngland, the lord of the
castle sent out some of his strongest men to find a
log that would he big enough to hum from Christmas
Eve to New Vear.s.
Christmas Eve the great iog was laid in the fireplace
and everybody watched il burn until the church bells
rang midnight and chimed Christmas Day. Then the
log was smothered in ashes till morning and so on every
night thereafter. And at New Year's a brand of that
Yule log was saved to light the next fire at next Yule-tide.
So in these days the Christmas spirit is passed
from year to" year through the gifts we give.
