tention in the American Women's
Club.
The members of the club, who
have recently moved into a new
home, received cards a short time
ago announcing that on a certain
buttons!1'5 the clubhouse would be closed

was given- It developed later vhat
the clubhouse had been closed in
order that Queen Mary might iviidt
anil inspect it. ... Then the ? storm
broke.
One version was that the Queen
had expressed a desire to see the
clubhouse and had given orders that
the
club must be cleared of all its
members when
he came. 'Another
version was that tho officials of the
club had made the Queen's visit the
occasion for a select little gathering.
Some of the democratic members are
protesting against being deprived of
their club rights for the sake of
royalty, others are storming against
the officials. The controversy prom
ises to become quite interesting and
may lead to a debate on the decree
of democracy which Americans
should adopt when in England. Some
maintain that the closing of the club
was most undemocratic.
The Evening Standard comments:
"There is something of an amused
stir among club women concerning
this event, for at this supposed
stronghold of republicanism the visit
caused more anxiety and more reg-
lations than it would have done in an
