Johnny Hines, besides being a
c!nan-cut, likeable and human comed
ian, is equally at home when it
comes to' performing fearless acro
batic feats, smashing into fast mov
ing trains, und also a terpsichorean
expert who would make even the
illustrious Maurie blush. But that's
another way or saying that Johnny
Hines is as versatile an artist as
there ts on the screen and certainly
he has created a lovable character
with an individualism that puts him
in a class by himself. It is an orig
inal ehuiracteri'.ation that is a mix
ture of Wallace Reid and Harold
'Llovd
And in his latest vehicle, "Sure-
Fire Flint," Johnny Hines not only
exceeds the expectations of his most
liberal friends, but through it will
add many, many thousand more ad
mirers to his list, for this comedy
dramu is a genuine knockout, so
chockful of luughs that your sides
fairly ache when it is ull over. But
it also has pathos, thrills and ro
mance. (All of which testifies to the
high calibre showmanship of all
those who in any way contributed to
the production of the picture, which
is good enough for the very best
theatres in this or other lands.
, Charles C. Burr made a lot of
promises, when he selected this story
for Johnny. But he didn't go far
enough in these. "Sure-Fire Flint"
is Hine's masterpiece and will make
Burr a richer producer-distributor.
Taken from any angle, the picture
stands out like a 'powerful light
house on a dark night. 'Direction,
production, photography, lighting and
last, but far from the least in value,
titling all of these are of the first
water, flawless, and contribute to
make a superlatively refreshing at
uraction. Also showing a "Fightingi Blood
Story." .. I

Richard Bnrthelmess in "Fury," a
rollicking, stirring .drnma of the
deep sea from the facile pen of Ed
mund Goulding, will' tie the First
Nutional piece de resistance nit the
Star Theatre Thursday and , Friday.
This production is heralded as an
even more ambitious dramatic ef
fort than any other of Barthelmess'
highly popular screen successes, in
cluding either "Tol'able David" or
"The Bond Boy."
A very large portion of the pic
ture was taken at sea in a picture
sque old four-masted sailing schoon
er, for Barthelmess plays the role
of a cowed young second mate whose
spirit is not thoroughly aroused un
til his father, the captain, throws
discredit on the name of the girl
the boy intended to marry.
Then, later, on learning from the
lips of his dying father the name of
the man who had wronged his moth
er, his whole nature changes and he
swears vengeance. Which leads to
gripping denouement and the culmin
ation of a romance.
Dorothy Gish, is Barthelmess'
leading lady, portraying the role of
Minnie, the little London boarding
house slavey with whom the bashful
young mate falls in love. Tyrone
Power, famous on stage and screen.
has the part of Cantain Levton.
Others in important iroles are Barry
Macoilum, rat liurtigan and Jessie
Arnold.
"Fury' was directed by Henry
King, who also directed the preced
ing Barthelmess successes of the
past year.

youthful Longfellow was watching
a potter working at his wheel, the
verse is believed to have had the
same source of inspiration which,

in "Keramos."
As related by Mr. I.nnison, one
of the I'avorllo haunts of Longfellow
as a boy was the small 'pottery of
Benjamin Dodge, on Brattle Street.
Longfellow, watching a vessel tak

old potter, one day scrawled four
linos of verso on a slip of paper:
"No handicraftman's art
Can lo our art compare:
We potters make our pots
Of what we potters are."
Then he slipped away to join his
companions. Benjamin Dodge, ab
sent from his task, returned and
found the paper- And because the
lines grasped his fancy, he wrote
them on a plaque of clay and had
it baked. For vears the panel hung
over his wheel. lAi new firm orected
