President Gray cites the trans
portation act. under which the
railroads arc now operating, and
accentuates tho point that the
arrangement under which the
railroads were paid during the
Federaj Control came to an end
on the last day of August, li)20.
The statement of President H
Gray quotes figures showing
that the railroads of the coun
try have never yet secured the
return of (i per cent (later re
duced to 5.75 per cent) fixed
by the , Interstate Commerce
Commission, and asserts that,
on such n basis, the government
would now owe the railroads
ore than a (billion dollars.
That the railroad earnings
have been better since January,
1923 than for the same period m
any of the three preceding yea's
we are assured, "but lh" ; v o
