The alwve is a question worth thinking ahout. It was brought:
to our notice most forcefully when we drove up in front of tho
Union hotel a few days ago and found a carpet of green grass sur
rounding the hotel, when hut a few weeks ago not. a spear of grass
was noticeable Last season the only thing that marred the beauty
of the Union Hotel was lack of a lawn. Today that lawn is almost
perfect. ' ;
( How did it happen? Almost as by magic the green carpet was
laid. Here's the secret: Patsy Clark, the Union Hotel manager,
loves grass and flowers and babies and dogs and fish ; his big heart
beats atune with nature, and when he personally gave his atten
tion to watering and caring for the lawn surrounding his hotel
the results were marvelous. At Hot Lake the old florist can make
anything grow quickly; he can make a plant bloom that to many
would be hopeless. The reason is he loves his flowers.
Nature will respond to the mechanical hand, to be sure, but
all students of nature are firmly convinced that she responds much
better and more quickly to the hand that loves the grasses and
the flowers. ' .
It is great to be able to appreciate nature even in a smaller
degree than those whose hearts are in perfect accord with her. A
drive over ihe valley with the mountains so pretty, with the. vege
tation so heavy, with tho crops so remarkable is a revelation to
one whose mind is not centered entirely on making money or upon
the industrial grind.
, Yes, great is nature, and nowhere is she more supreme than
in this part of Eastern Oregon. We can appreciate her to a cer
tain oxten to an extent that makes us love her dearly, but we
ore only students in the primary grade, while such men as Patsy
Clark and the Hot Lake florist are graduates.

Pounding Parties To Pieces
The result of Minnesota's senatorial election Is hut another stop
in the seeming desire of the American people to do away entirely
with political parties. Senator-elect Johnson is a sample of the
' product jittei hy the annihilation of the party system of govern
ment. His career remains to prove his worth, and that part of
the transaction is not so important at present, as the lesson that
Minnesota's election teaches.
We are drifting away from the governmental principles and
practices laid down hy those men of wisdom who framed this na
tion and her form of government. We are bidding good-bye to
the representative form of government and surely are adopting
the pure democracy.
The cause for the change is that we all depend too much upon
government and expect the government to do too much. This,
however, is probably accounted for because in govern-menlal
activitie some classes h ave profited heavily and we can
not understand if that he permitted why we all should not bene
fit by governmental assistance.
