Considerable .significance is attached to the appeal issued by g
the American Construction Council in New York that there be g
a slow-down in building oerutiins to meet "a serious situation ' g
throughout the country." jo
In other woids building costs both of labor and material are
so high that unless there is an immediate halt, building opera- S
lions themselves will halt. Consequently the council asks that o
r.ll new building operations be withheld until the situation be
comes stabilized.
To that end the council appeal's to banking institutions to "cur
tail the financing of speculative building until the close of the
summer" and that public 'operations be delayed until later.
I Like as not this iicstion will be settled on the natural laws of
economics as most things of the kind are. Obviously the build
ing market is abnormal. Somebody is trying to kill the goose
that lays the golden egg. It is an unfortunate situation after a
long period of building inactivity, but it seems unescapable. The
war has not finished levying its toll.
