I Hoys 'Leave Home.
Tour Union boys, averaging about
VI years of age, decided last week
i that the old home town was a little
jtoo dull for their enterprising spir
,its, started out Thursday to see the
world. Marshal Van fiouten was de
spatched after the youngsters, but
they succeeded in evading the offi
cer and had journeyed as far as
North Powder when they were turned
over to the local justice. Respond
ing to a phone message Mr. Sirrinc
went up to North Powder and
hrnught the runaways back home.
Some of tho boys had been guilty of
a mlsdenmcanur and it i believed
that fear of punishment was the
cause of them leaving home. All
of the boys are back in school and
feel very penitent about the matter.

A rabies scare was caused in this
end of the valley last Friday when
a coyote was killed in one of the
barns on the Phy ranch near Hot
Lake. The animal was discovered in
a stall anil the men finally succeed
ed in killing it. The animal's mouth
was filled with porcupine quills and
this may have been the cause of it
coming Jown to the ranch in day
light, but the authorities were a lit
tle susnicious and the covote head was
put in a box and shipped away toj

Superintendent fionney, of the
stale fish hatchery, returned Friday
from a trip to Wallowa Lake, where
he is looking after the construction
of a string of ponds. These ponds
are situated near the resort at the
head of the lake and the water used
is being taken from a spring. There
will be several Ponds arranged in
a long single line with the water
running through all of them. -When
Mr- Uonney came home he . left the
work in charge of Willurd Miles,
who with Mrs. Miles, is now living at
the resort.
Funeral Services Held.
The funeral of W. W- Keuter was
held nt the Methodist church Satur
day afternoon at 2:IiO o'clock, with
both Rev Quinn, the local pastor, and
Rev. Quiglev of La Grande, in charge
of the services. There were many

lodges to which the deceased and his
sons belonged and from other sources
including a very beautiful wreath
given by the druggitH of La Grande.
Rev. Kvuter had been pastor of the
Methodist church here about 'XI
years ago, and was well remembered
by many of the older residents. Al
though there are several children in
Uhe family, owing to the distance they
were away from here, and the death
coming so suddenly, only two were
present at the funeral services, Wal
ter, of La Grande, and Kugene of
Union. The body was laid to rest
in the Union cemetery.
Work is . progressing on the new
